Excerpt from Ben Jonson and Shakespeare Now if this statement is intended to mean (and I can assign no other reasonable significance to the words) that we know more about the life of Shakspere of Strat ford than we know about that of any poet contemporary with him, there is an audacity about it which is really quite sublime; indeed the proverbial one step between the sublime and the ridiculous seems here to have entirely disappeared. Book Description
Excerpt from Ben Jonson's Plays, Vol. 1 of 2 The greatest of English dramatists except Shakespeare, the first literary dictator and poet-laureate, a writer of verse, prose, satire, and criticism who most potently of all the men of his time affected the subsequent course of English letters: such was Ben Jonson, and as such his strong personality as sumes an interest to us almost unparalleled, at least in his age. Ben Jonson came of the stock that was centuries after to give to the world Thomas Carlyle; for Jonson's grandfather was of Annandale, over the Solway, whence he migrated to England. Jonson's father lost his estate under Queen Mary, having been cast into prison and forfeited. He entered the church, but died a month before his illustrious son was born, leaving his widow and child in poverty. Jonson's birthplace was Westminster, and the time of his birth early in 1573. He was thus nearly ten years Shakespeare's junior, and less well off, if a trifle better born. But Jonson did not profit even by this slight advantage. His mother married beneath her, a wright or bricklayer, and Jonson was for a time apprenticed to the trade. As a youth he attracted the attention of the famous antiquary, William Camden, then usher at Westminster School, and there the poet laid the solid foundations of his classical learning. Jonson always held Camden in veneration, acknowledging that to him he owed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Stagery of Shakespeare Moreover I see no reason to introduce extraneous problems by comparisons with plays written for performance under circum stances which have no parallel in Shakespeare, as those by Ben Jonson for the Children of the Chapel. The single exception I have made is to Show the use Of the device of discovery. This involves, Of course, an attempt to establish the continuity Of practice which connects the practice of drawing curtains on the Elizabethan Stage with that, of drawing scenes on the Restoration Stage. Book Description
The extraordinary character of Ben Jonson has only recently been brought into the light. Critics traditionally exalted Shakespeare, at Jonson’s expense. In this biography, first published in 1986, the author presents a full and accurate account of Jonson’s life in modern times. Rosalind Miles follows Jonson from his obscure beginnings to his burial in Westminster Abbey, as the first Poet Laureate, in 1637. Her Jonson is vivid and vigorous, equally alive in his life and in his work. This title will be of interest to students of history, English literature and Renaissance drama.

Book Description
Excerpt from Shakespeare, Select Plays: Much Ado About Nothing In a previous entry, which apparently belongs to the same year, under the date of the 4th of August, Much Ado is, with As You Like It, Henry V, and Ben Jonson's Every Man in his Humour, among the books which were for some reason or other 'to be staied.' Besides the quarto of 1600 no other edition of this play appeared till it was included in the first folio of 1623. Book Description
Excerpt from The Jonson Allusion-Book: A Collection of Allusions to Ben Jonson From 1597 to 1700 Moreover, in the period following the Restoration the editors have had to exercise a certain discretion in condensing allusions and passing over those possessing little or no significance. Most of these, however, have been collected, and, if the opportunity offers, may later be published by way of a supplement. Perhaps it should be added that the numerous jingling rhymes printed by W. R. Chetwood in his Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Ben Jonson, 1756, have been entirely ignored; Chetwood cites no authority for them, and they seem to be crude fabrications of his own Muse. Mr. Bradley originally undertook the task of gathering these allusions in the preparation of a doctoral dissertation at Cornell University, and to him belongs the major credit of collecting and transcribing the passages. Later Mr. Adams became associated with him in the labor, and assumed specifically the responsibility of editing the material for the reader. It has not always been easy to fix the dates of the passages quoted, or to identify the authors; and in dealing with such a mass of detail, it has doubtless been impossible to escape errors. For all such defects the editors crave the indulgence of scholars. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
