The figures are brilliantly glazed and coloured, but the stone pillar holding the lantern is left in plain biscuit. The characters on the pillar tell of some legend in connection with the game. The piece is slightly warped in the baking, a not uncommon result of the early unscientific methods of the Japanese potters.
