"This report presents the results of an archaeological reconnaissance survey and monitoring in the ahupuaʻa of Kawaihae 2, ʻŌuli, Waikōloa, and puaʻukapu, in the former Waikoloa maneuver area (WMA), South Kohala District, Hawaiʻi Island. The WMA, comprising approximately 91,000 acres, was used during the World War II era (ca. 1943 through 1945) as a U.S. military training area for ground maneuvers and live artillery-firing range. This project was conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Corps of Engineers District Honolulu (contract no. DACA-83-95-D-0006, delivery order 0036) in conjunction with phase II engineering evaluation and cost analysis (EE/CA) investigations of explosive ordnance (OE) and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in the WMA. The purpose of the archaeological survey was to document archaeological and cultural resources in select areas of the WMA being considered for EE/CA investigations. Six areas (designated SA-1 through SA-6), consisting of approximately 3,717 acres, were surveyed in the lower elevations of Kawaihae 2, ʻŌuli and Waikōloa" -- Abstract.
