Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1916-18 These two years have brought many losses to the College. On February 12, 1917, Pauline Adeline Durant, the widow of the founder of the College, died at her home in Wellesley. Mrs. Durant gave the heartiest co-operation to Mr. Durant's plan for founding the College, and throughout his life assisted him in every way. After his death in October, 1881, she accepted the care of the College as a sacred trust from her husband, and gave to it thought, time, and money. Mrs. Durant had been an invalid confined to her home for more than three years before her death, but until these later years no meeting of the Board of Trustees nor any college function was complete without her presence. N 0 more just appreciation of Mrs. Durant's life and work would be possible than that furnished by the following Resolutions adopted by the Trustees and by the faculty. In the death of Pauline Adeline Durant on February 12, 1917, Wellesley College loses not only its associate founder but a devoted friend and bene factor. Book Description
Excerpt from Eleventh Annual Report of the President and of the Treasurer, 1916 In addition to the usual current business of the Foundation, the year has been devoted largely to extensive correspondence and many conferences concerning the comprehensive Plan of Insurance and Annuities which was issued as the Ninth Bulle tin. This plan, which is discussed fully in later pages, has now received the general approval of nearly all of our associated institutions which have expressed a formal opinion. The general study of pensions has continued without abatement, and a report upon teachers' pensions in particular has been prepared at the request of the committee on pensions of the National Education Association and presented to the committee, the National Council of Education, and the Association itself. For the Division of Educational Enquiry the report includes a statement of pro gress in its studies Of legal education, engineering education, the training of teachers in Missouri, and of Federal grants for agricultural and mechanical education, each of which is now approaching completion. Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Report of the President and Treasurer to the Trustees: With Accompanying Documents for the Year Ending, June 30, 1918 To the Trustees: Agreeably to the provisions of the Statutes, the President submits herewith the Annual Report of the work of the University for the year ending June 30, 1918. As has been pointed out in earlier reports, it is no longer possible, or even desirable, to attempt to discuss in the Annual Report every form and aspect of the University's many-sided activity. A selection must be made of those topics which at the moment seem of particular importance or interest. The attached reports of the various Deans, Directors, and other chief administrative officers are submitted as parts of the President's Annual Report for the careful consideration of the Trustees and their appropriate committees. The last Annual Report described in some detail the conditions that prevailed in the University at the time of the entry of the United States into the war and immediately thereafter. During the year 1917-1918, the effects of the war have been felt on every hand, so much so that the normal development of the University's life and work has been to all intents and purposes suspended. We would not have had it otherwise. Columbia University, as a great public service institution with an unbroken record of patriotic devotion to the highest public interest, could have no end or purpose of its own to serve that would for a moment compare with its duty to assist the Government in the prosecution of the war to a victorious conclusion. Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Reports President and Treasurer: 1910 One of my first proposals at Wellesley in the autumn of 1899, was to abolish compulsory attendance on morning prayers. The plan was approved only by a small majority of the Faculty, but the Trustees permitted me to make the experiment. With the beautiful new chapel building and every external aid to devotion, I could not bear to have the service perfunctory, with monitors to mark attendance. Much of what I hoped for has been attained. It is a very real moment of devotion when with the first low note of the organ, a true call to prayer, every head is bowed, and the service begins with silent consecration. The hymn, and psalm which follow, the Scripture lesson and prayer, and the closing recessional, make a brief service to the value of which I have had many touching testimonies. Book Description
Excerpt from Annual Report President and Treasurer, 1914-15, Vol. 2: Wellesley, Massachusetts, March, 1916 The history of the year must record losses as well as gains. On January 11, 1915, Katharine Coman, Emeritus Professor of Economics, died at her home in Wellesley. Miss Coman's active service to the College covers a period of thirty-three years. On her retirement in June, 1913, the Trustees made Miss Coman Professor of Economics Emeri tus, and in accepting her resignation testified to the value of her work for the College by adopting a resolution which was printed in the President's Report for the academic year 1912-13. Miss Coman joined the faculty at Wellesley in 1880 as a young instructor in Rhetoric; from 1881 to 1883 she was instructor in History; she was made Professor of His tory in 1883, Professor of History and Political Economy in 1885, and when in 1900 the department of Economics was organized, she was made Professor of Economics and Sociology and given charge of the new department. In 1899-00, the first year of President Hazard's term of office, Miss Coman served the College as Dean. On January 3lst a memorial service was held in the college chapel at which there were addresses by Professor Hayes and Professor Balch of our own faculty. By Professor George Herbert Palmer of Harvard, and by President Woolley of Mt. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
