Century^ owes much to the concept of courtly love. Anti-feminism as a literary tradition is known in fifteenth-century Spain through such works as the third book of De Amore, by Andreas Capellanus, the Corbaccio and De Casibus by Boccaccio, and the second part of the Roman de la Rose, by Jean de Meung. An anti-feminist work by the Spaniard Luis de Lucena, the Repeticibn de Amores, which is roughly contemporary to La Celestina, is studied and compared with the first act, and shows a strong similarity in theme and use of sources. In the final chapter an attempt is made to identify the author of the first act mth Alfonso liartinez de Toledo, the Archpriest of Talavera. Alfonso klartinez is the author of the book known as Arcipreste de Talauera, i^^ich first appeared in 143 S and is primarily a treatise in condemnation of passionate love and contains an anti-feminist section. The work is a monu- . ment of early Spanish prose and its in.fluence on La Celestina, especially the first act, has long been noted. The theory that the Archpriest of Talavera is the author of the first act, which has not yet been suggested, is based first of all on the fact that the Archpriest could have written the act since he was still alive in I466 and the style of the act appears to be from an earlier period than the rest of the playj secondly from the similarity of the style, sources and theme of the Arcipreste de Talauera and the first act; and thirdly on the internal evidence of the act which indicates that the author was an old man and probably belonged to the clergy. In the conclusion the significance of the study of the first act as a separate entity for the understanding of La Celestina as a whole is briefly discussed.

The Baroque Spanish stage is populated with virile queens and feminized kings. This study examines the diverse ways in which seventeenth-century comedias engage with the discourse of power and rulership and how it relates to gender. A privileged place for ideological negotiation, the comedia provided negative and positive reflections of kingship at a time when there was a perceived crisis of monarchical authority in the Habsburg court. Author María Cristina Quintero explores how playwrights such as Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Tirso de Molina, Antonio Coello, and Francisco Bances Candamo--taking inspiration from legend, myth, and history--repeatedly staged fantasies of feminine rule, at a time when there was a concerted effort to contain women's visibility and agency in the public sphere. The comedia's preoccupation with kingship together with its obsession with the representation of women (and women's bodies) renders the question of royal subjectivity inseparable from issues surrounding masculinity and femininity. Taking into account theories of performance and performativity within a historical context, this study investigates how the themes, imagery, and language in plays by Calderón and his contemporaries reveal a richly paradoxical presentation of gendered monarchical power.

Today most chess historians agree that the weak chess queen, named "dame" in France as from the XIV century, changed to a powerful chess queen in Spain in 1475. Around this year we also see a change of the weak bishop to a strong bishop, according to the chess poem Scachs d'amor. In order to strengthen our hypothesis of Isabella I of Castile (Isabel la Católica) we have written a book about the new bishop and a book about Scachs d'amor in English. Concentrating now on Virgin Mary in relationship with Isabella I of Castile we observe that the Augustinian monastic Martin de Córdoba wrote in 1468 the work El Jardin de las donzellas. It was directed to Princess Isabel I of Castile with the intention to contribute to her education as future Queen. Cordoba was the first writer who draws equivalencies between Isabella I of Castile and Virgin Mary, which became one of her standard portrayals. Shorty thereafter we see the appearance of a new powerful chess queen.
