Book Description
Excerpt from Foxes, Foxhounds and Fox-Hunting Whether it be for better or worse we cannot tell, for hunting goes on despite the advent of the motor car, the rush of traffic, and the glass-like surface of the roads. It takes a lot to prevent a keen hunting man from following his favourite pursuit, and so despite the wire, the petrol fumes, and all the rest of it, big fields still forgather at every meet of hounds. Book Description
Excerpt from The Life of a Fox: Written by Himself Pytchly's Story reveals the very foundation of Fox hunting, which is to stick to the line. There are indeed two opinions about nose. Some Foxhounds may have, like some human beings, a more sensitive organ of smell than others; if this can be discovered in a Foxhound, combined with tongue, speed, intelligence, perseverance, and constitu tion, all contained in a frame of sufficient symmetry, then that Foxhound should be bred from freely. But the prob ability is, that while some Hounds may have keener noses than others the vast majority have sufficiently serviceable noses provided they are encouraged, or even allowed, to use them. There is no doubt whatever that where the Fox scores against the Hounds is by gaining time when he turns. It is the turn that tells. If all Foxes that were found went straight ahead, many more would be killed. The proof of this is that even on a day when scent is poor, Hounds always run fast when the Fox goes straight to an earth or drain. He knows the way. He goes straight through all his well known smeuses in the fences, and the leading Hounds have no difficulty, his scent being in their faces all the way. Book Description
Internationally renowned Master and huntsman Hugh J. Robards, MFH engagingly informs foxhunters, new or experienced, how to more fully absorb the drama of the hunt. What is the huntsman doing? Why does he do that? What about the whippers-in? The Field Master? The hounds? The fox? What problems do each encounter in the field during the course of a typical hunt? What decisions must they make? It may be a revelation to some, especially those who hunt to ride, but even while standing still, things are happening if you know what to look for and how to interpret what you see. By learning what to watch and listen for, field members can increase their awareness and thus their enjoyment of every hunting day.

Book Description
Excerpt from Fox-Hunting in the Shires IN this volume Mr. Dale has given the results of his experience in the hunting fields of Leicester shire and the surrounding counties, and has treated his subject from the dual standpoint, for which his earlier work so fits him, of hunting historian and hunting - correspondent. His chapters are almost em tirely practical, though he digresses where necessary to criticise, always briefly and to the point, such modern questions as the presence of ladies in the field, the latest development of the capping system, and the question of hunting dress and hunting morals. For the most part, and with some few such exceptions, he gives us minute descriptions of the country known somewhat vaguely as the Shires, and some very excellent advice as to the purchase or schooling of the right kind of horse for hunting that country. The photographs obtained by Mr. R. B. Lodge, with considerable guiding assistance from the author, have here and there been supplemented, with a View to illustrating in as practical fashion as possible the main features of the book.
