The dramatic evolution of catalytic converters in the last thirty years was a result of a need worldwide to reduce pollution created by the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines. Environmental concerns have led American, Japanese and European Union (EU) legislation to pose continuously stricter emission limits for petrol engines in the last decades. The catalytic converter has become the most important means of exhaust treatment to achieve the desired emission limits. The international legislation has also created a need for a regular assessment of the efficiency of the catalytic converter in order to detect a deterioration of its conversion efficiency as soon as this deterioration takes place. The assessment of conversion efficiency of a catalytic converter can take place during normal driving of a vehicle (on-board diagnosis or OBD) or in a workshop by specialized technicians. The most important methods nowadays are the OBD methods. The evolution of methods concerned with OBD and non-OBD monitoring and diagnosing of efficiency of catalytic converters of internal combustion engines is described based on patents and published patent applications. Non-patent references are also used. The basic principles of modern catalytic converters are described in an extensive Introduction, where the importance of monitoring and diagnosing the efficiency of catalytic converters is demonstrated. The book is divided into four parts. The first part describes methods involving the use of oxygen or air/fuel exhaust gas sensors to determine the oxygen storage capacity of a catalytic converter. The second part describes methods involving the use of temperature sensors to determine the exothermic reaction capacity of a catalytic converter. The third part describes all other methods existing in patent literature that monitor and diagnose the efficiency of catalytic converters. The great majority of the methods of the third part involves exhaust gas concentration measurements. The fourth part comprises a general discussion of all methods described. Designing automotive catalysts for the effective control of NOx, HC (Hydrocarbon) and CO (Carbon Monoxide) emissions under both lean and stoichiometric engine operation is a challenging task. The research presented in this thesis assesses the performance efficiency of a three-zone prototype catalytic converter in reducing exhaust emissions from a gasoline engine, operating in HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition) and SI (Spark Ignition) mode under lean and stoichiometric conditions. The research was carried out using Jaguar V6 engine operating in SI and HCCI mode using commercial unleaded gasoline fuel. The catalyst efficiency in reducing the three pollutant emissions is closely related to the exhaust gas conditions (e.g. temperature and space velocity), oxygen content and composition i.e. NOx, CO and HC concentrations. As part of this study a quantitative and qualitative analysis of C1-C11 hydrocarbon compounds achieved before and after the catalytic converter. The results show that hydrocarbon species formation in the combustion process and destruction over the catalyst is primarily dependent on the engine operation and combustion mode (i.e. HCCI or SI). Alkane concentrations were found to be higher in the HCCI mode, while alkene species were mainly found in the engine exhaust under SI mode. The analysis showed that the HCCI exhaust contained heavier hydrocarbon species (e.g. toluene, p-exylene, naphthalene and methylnaphthalene) compared to the exhaust from the SI engine operation. Methane, Naphthalene and methylnaphthalene were the most resistant compounds while toluene was the most degradable compound over the catalyst.

Internal combustion engines are a key aspect of society, and their continued use poses challenges from an environmental standpoint since they emit pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions. This dissertation focuses on experimental analysis of dual-fuel low temperature combustion (LTC), which can be used as a strategy to reduce engine-out emissions and increase engine efficiencies. Dual fuel LTC uses two different fuels, a high reactivity fuel (HRF) and a low reactivity fuel (LRF). The HRF has a higher cetane number than the LRF, which allows for easier auto-ignition in compression ignition engines. Dual fuel engines also utilize high air to fuel ratios to achieve LTC. This, combined with early injection timings of the HRF, helps to reduce oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions. At low load conditions, this is a problem since higher cycle-to-cycle variations can increase pollutants such as unburned hydrocarbons (UHC) and carbon monoxide (CO). To combat this, a firm understanding of dual fuel LTC is required, as well as a strategy for reducing the cycle-to-cycle variations. The first part of this work further identifies a combustion heat release 'transformation region' across different HRF injection timings wherein in-cylinder conditions arise that are conducive for ultra-low NOx emissions. This phenomenon occurs for different IC engine platforms and different fueling combinations. An experimental analysis, 0D chemical kinetic analysis, and 3D computation fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis were combined to elucidate the underlying causes for this phenomenon. The local stratification level of the fuel/air mixture was identified as the likely cause of combustion heat release transformation with changing HRF injection timing. The second part of the present work builds upon the findings of the first part by utilizing local stratification to mitigate cycle-to-cycle variations that are present at low loads. A framework of experiments was formulated for both a low engine load of 5 bar gross indicated mean effective pressure (IMEPg) and a high load of 15 bar IMEPg, wherein an injection strategy concept termed Spray TArgeted Reactivity Stratification (STARS) was utilized using both diesel and Polyoxymethelene-dimethyl-ether (POMDME) as HRFs. A steep decrease in UHC and CO emissions (> 80% reductions) as well as improved engine operation stability were demonstrated using both HRFs with dual fuel LTC at 5 bar IMEPg. Further, potential for emissions mitigation and efficiency improvement are discussed, as well as differences in the experimental results shown between the differing HRFs.

Requirements for alternatives to diesel-fueled vehicles are developing, particularly in urban centers not in compliance with mandated air quality standards. An operator of fleets of diesel- powered vehicles may be forced to either purchase new vehicles or equip some of the existing fleets with engines designed or modified to run on alternative fuels. In converting existing vehicles, the operator can either replace the existing engine or modify it to burn an alternative fuel. Work described in this report addresses the problem of modifying an existing diesel engine to operate on natural gas. Tecogen has developed a technique for converting turbocharged automotive diesel engines to operate as dedicated spark-ignition engines with natural gas fuel. The engine cycle is converted to a more-complete-expansion cycle in which the expansion ratio of the original engine is unchanged while the effective compression ratio is lowered, so that engine detonation is avoided. The converted natural gas engine, with an expansion ratio higher than in conventional spark- ignition natural gas engines, offers thermal efficiency at wide-open- throttle conditions comparable to its diesel counterpart. This allows field conversion of existing engines. Low exhaust emissions can be achieved when the engine is operated with precise control of the fuel air mixture at stoichiometry with a 3-way catalyst. A Navistar DTA- 466 diesel engine with an expansion ratio of 16.5 to 1 was converted in this way, modifying the cam profiles, increasing the turbocharger boost pressure, incorporating an aftercooler if not already present, and adding a spark-ignition system, natural gas fuel management system, throttle body for load control, and an electronic engine control system. The proof-of-concept engine achieved a power level comparable to that of the diesel engine without detonation. A conversion system was developed for the Navistar DT 466 engine. NOx emissions of 1.5 g/bhp-h have been obtained.
