A partir del análisis crítico de las fuentes árabes, el autor -filólogo e historiador- aborda el estudio de la conquista, el aposentamiento de los conquistadores y la pronta desaparición de los mismos (árabes primero y después bereberes) del cuadrante noroeste peninsular, con el empeño de poner en claro unos hechos que se nos escapan. Al hacer una revisión de la toponimia de la zona así como el examen crítico de la antroponimia de las gentes del área estudiada, salen a la luz no pocos equívocos e imprecisiones sobre el particular, a la vez que queda de manifiesto el carácter efímero de la presencia musulmana en la región y la debilidad de los pactos establecidos con los naturales. La investigación culmina con un haz de constataciones que abrogan ciertas patrañas admitidas como verdades por nuestra historiografía.
