Book Description
A laser-based, table-top instrument is constructed to perform femtosecond soft x-ray transient absorption spectroscopy. Ultrashort soft x-ray pulses produced via high-order harmonic generation of the amplified output of a femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser system are used to probe atomic core-level transient absorptions in atoms and molecules. The results provide chemically specific, time-resolved dynamics with sub-50-fs time resolution. In this setup, high-order harmonics generated in a Ne-filled capillary waveguide are refocused by a gold-coated toroidal mirror into the sample gas cell, where the soft x-ray light intersects with an optical pump pulse. The transmitted high-order harmonics are spectrally dispersed with a home-built soft x-ray spectrometer, which consists of a gold-coated toroidal mirror, a uniform-line spaced plane grating, and a soft x-ray CCD camera. The optical layout of the instrument, design of the soft x-ray spectrometer, and spatial and temporal characterization of the high-order harmonics are described. Examples of static and time-resolved photoabsorption spectra collected on this apparatus are presented.

Book Description
This work studies the relaxation dynamics of molecules in both the gas and liquid phases after strong field ionization, using transient absorption in the soft X-rays. In particular, the thesis presents the first realization of time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy in the spectral water window with a laser-based HHG source. These remarkable experiments were not only performed for isolated molecules, but also in liquids, for which the spectral coverage of the K-edges of C, N, and O are of primary importance for investigating biological molecules. The technique relies on the generation of high-order harmonics to further probe the electronic structure of molecules. Using the atomic selectivity of high energies and the temporal coherence of laser technology, we demonstrate the observation of the first stages of chemical transformation of matter in the gas and liquid phases.

Book Description
Englische Version: The invention of the laser made coherent light sources widely available. Technical advances in pulse power und pulse duration allow the study of linear and nonlinear interactions of light and matter and ultrashort time scales. The highest nonlinear frequency up-converting process, High-order harmonics generation, is today the standard for up to attosecond short table-top sources. This method has been recently applied for ultrafast spectroscopy in the soft x-ray water window. In this thesis, a table-top high-order harmonics setup is presented and used for pump-probe spectroscopy in the water window. A home-built soft x-ray absorption spectrometer enables the so far best resolution and detected flux at nitrogen K-edge. The setup is utilized to study ionization dynamics of diatomic nitrogen on femtosecond time scales and the subsequent picosecond plasma dynamics. In the realm of air lasing, where lasing in nitrogen ions formed by strong field ionization is studied new insides are provided, narrowing down possible theoretical interpretations. The low absorption cross section of water between the carbon and oxygen K-edges known as the water window, enables to investigate molecules and ions in aqueous solution. The first steady-state soft x-ray spectra are presented for ions and molecular systems in aqueous solution recorded with a table-top laser based setup. Furthermore, the approach is also applied for transient absorption spectra. Additional data from beamtimes at large scale facilities allow for a comparison of the approaches. Finally, spectroscopic results taken at BESSY II are presented. The structure and local environment of excess protons in water is studied for more than two centuries and are still controversially discussed. [...].

Book Description
During the last two decades, remarkable and often spectacular progress has been made in the methodological and instrumental aspects of x–ray absorption and emission spectroscopy. This progress includes considerable technological improvements in the design and production of detectors especially with the development and expansion of large-scale synchrotron reactors All this has resulted in improved analytical performance and new applications, as well as in the perspective of a dramatic enhancement in the potential of x–ray based analysis techniques for the near future. This comprehensive two-volume treatise features articles that explain the phenomena and describe examples of X–ray absorption and emission applications in several fields, including chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, amorphous and liquid systems, synchrotron radiation, and surface phenomena. Contributors explain the underlying theory, how to set up X–ray absorption experiments, and how to analyze the details of the resulting spectra. X-Ray Absorption and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy: Theory and Applications: Combines the theory, instrumentation and applications of x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies which offer unique diagnostics to study almost any object in the Universe. Is the go-to reference book in the subject for all researchers across multi-disciplines since intense beams from modern sources have revolutionized x-ray science in recent years Is relevant to students, postdocurates and researchers working on x-rays and related synchrotron sources and applications in materials, physics, medicine, environment/geology, and biomedical materials
