Book Description
The potential efficacy of water mist fire suppression systems has been demonstrated in a wide range of applications and by numerous experimental programs. These applications have included Class B spray and pool fires, aircraft cabins, shipboard machinery and engine room spaces, shipboard accommodation spaces, and computer and electronics applications. To summarize these experimental efforts, the efficacy of a particular water mist system is strongly dependent on the ability to not only generate sufficiently small droplet sizes but also distribute sufficient mist concentrations throughout the compartment. A widely accepted critical concentration of water droplets required to extinguish a fire is yet to be determined. Factors that contribute to the success or failure of a water mist system for a particular application include droplet size, velocity, the spray pattern geometry as well as the momentum and mixing characteristics of the spray jet, and the geometry and other characteristics of the protected area. At this time, the effect of these factors on system effectiveness is not well known. This will necessitate evaluation of water mist in context of a specific system for unique applications for the reasonable future unless breakthroughs in understanding of mist distribution and flame interaction occur through research. Book Description
The use of both fixed and portable water mist systems for fire suppression on naval vessels continues to increase. There are several reasons for this. Water mist produces no acid gases and therefore can be discharged in a space where persons are present. It consists of small water droplets (average mean diameter of 90% of the droplets less than 300 μm) that rapidly reduce the temperature in a space. The effectiveness of water mist in cooling a space reduces the volume of water necessary to extinguish or suppress a fire. This lessens both the chance of flooding and costs associated with cleanup arising from water damage. In this report the use and efficacy of additives in water mist systems is reviewed. In most instances, additives have been investigated to determine if they will improve the efficacy of a water mist fire suppression system. Additives that have been investigated include film forming additives for Class B fires (generally fluorinated surfactants), alkali metals salts, transition metal chlorides, sulphates, phosphates and organic compounds such as sucrose and urea. In other instances, the additives were required to depress of the freezing point of the water used in the suppression systems. These suppression systems were proposed for use in conditions where the system might be exposed to temperatures below the freezing point of pure water. The additives included compounds such as potassium acetate and propylene glycol.

Book Description
This report describes an experimental study that provides research information and data to assist with understanding the mechanisms for successful water mist fire protection systems in offices. Water mist systems are increasingly being considered and used in the UK for the fire protection of buildings, including commercial premises such as hotels, offices and retail units. They can provide property and asset protection by limiting the extent of damage associated with a fire and thereby limiting unnecessary wastage of resources, time, salvage and re-instatement operations. However, the acceptability of water mist systems is often unproven, the limits of their effectiveness are largely unknown and appropriate acceptance criteria are not well established. Successful water mist performance can only be achieved by carefully engineered designs to meet particular applications. The objectives of this study were to: - characterise the mechanisms and factors that govern the effectiveness of water mist fire protection systems - define a fire test protocol for evaluating water mist fire protection systems for commercial office applications. - address some of the identified gaps in knowledge with respect to water mist systems. It is only with this knowledge and understanding that fixed water mist suppression systems can be assessed and confidence given that they will be effective in protecting property and life.

Book Description
This report provides an evaluation of the fire fighting capabilities of the state-of-the-art water mist fire suppression systems in machinery space applications. The primary objective of this investigation was to evaluate the applicability of the International Maritime Organization's test protocol to machinery spaces with larger volumes, high ceilings and larger vent openings. In addition, the effects of compartment parameters (shape and height), mist system parameters (nozzle height and discharge rate), and fire parameters (heat release rate, fire type, and location) were also evaluated. Extinguishment times in the over 150 tests ranged from under one minute to as long as twelve minutes with some fires never extinguished. The following water mist systems were included in this evaluation: Grinnell AquaMist, Kidde Fenwal, Reliable, Securiplex, and Spraying Systems.
