Book Description
Excerpt from History of Wesleyan Methodism, Vol. 2 Methodism during Wesley's Life - Necessity for Change in the System after his Death - Further Causes of Developement - These rendered more potent by the Character of the Societies - The Principle of Methodist Developement arose out of the Operation of a divine Purpose - No systematic Action taken to establish an improved Polity - The Result of this peculiar State of the Connexion. Our preceding researches have fully established the fact, that Methodism, throughout the lifetime of Wesley, mainly consisted in a series of efforts to evangelize the benighted nominal Christians of our country, and to lead them to the experience of inward godliness, and the practice of outward holiness. All that Wesley did in the way of organization, was not designed to work out any pre conceived plan, or to establish any particular system, but to save souls from the guilt and power of sin, and to train them up for heaven. This being the case, it cannot be any cause of wonder, that his death rendered very important changes necessary. As the working out of a system was not his ruling object. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of Methodism in the United States, Vol. 1 of 2 The following catalogue, arranged alphabetically under authors' names, includes but a minority of the volumes consulted in the preparation of this work. In some instances they have been published in various editions and by several publishers. Next to the official journals and other documents of the different denominations, the most important authorities are the personal journals of Wesley, Coke, Asbury, Garrettson, and other founders; the histories of Jesse Lee, Nathan Bangs, and Abel Stevens, in particular the last-named, whose works are invaluable and deserve the everlasting gratitude of both English and American Methodism. Bond, Emory, and Wakeley rendered valuable service; and Neely and Tigert pursued, in the order of time in which their names are placed, important investigations into the subjects comprehended under the titles of their works, and displayed the results in a clear and comprehensive manner. "The Wesley Memorial Volume," edited by Clark, and the "Lives of Methodist Bishops," edited by Flood and Hamilton, are very useful, the latter containing an immense amount of information in small compass. The special histories of the various branches of American Methodism, and the biographies of their founders, are indispensable. Among the biographies none surpasses Paine's "Life of McKendree," which is a mine of antiquarian knowledge and a repository of the writings of McKendree, Soule, and other controlling minds among those who gave Methodism its final forms. The "History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South," by Gross Alexander, treats many interesting phases of the life and growth of that body, and afforded aid in investigations required by the plan of this work. The works of Lucius C. Matlack on the slavery controversy admirably fill a place occupied by no other productions. The reports of different organizations, the minutes of Annual Conferences, the "Methodist Magazine," the reviews, and the files of the weekly periodicals of American Methodism have been searched, and a large mass of unpublished epistolary correspondence and other manuscript examined. It is believed that the bibliography here given will afford sufficient indication to those who may desire to examine authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from A History of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Year 1793 to the Year 1816 We have hitherto traced the progress of Methodism in this country, from its small beginning in 1766 to the close of the first General Conference in 1792. Though it had difficulties, both internal and external, to contend with, it won its way through every opposition, maintaining the purity of its character, and exerting its hallowing influence on society, in the meantime molding itself into a more compact form and firmer consistency, until we have seen its organization in one supreme judicatory to which its destinies, under God, were committed. I shall now proceed to narrate, as accurately as possible, its subsequent progress, both in its general councils and in its various ramifications over this extended continent.
