Excerpt from A d104-Book of Church History, Vol. 5 IN justice to the memory of a beloved friend and colleague, I can not refuse the request of his wife to preface this last work on which he was engaged with an explanatory statement. Gladly would I have performed also the additional service asked of me to bring down the history and literature to the present date, if it could have been done without neglecting more press ing duties which prevent me from finishing my own Church History. Excerpt from A Compendium Of Ecclesiastical History, Vol. 3 Besides the truth should not be disguised, that times of agitation in Which ideas of a thousand different shapes have been cast into the midst of the ecclesiastical community, but have hardly yet been clearly ascertained with regard to their reasons, or their nature and value; times, in which the people has indeed arrived at the perception of its want, but not at its clear recognition or true expression, and in Which parties are seeking to Vindicate their own struggles as the people's Will: that such times are not adapted to great mixt assemblages, in'which deeply penetrating alterations in ecclesiastical institutions and relations should be brought under deliberation. Again ecclesiastical deliberations require above al] others, calm and dispassionate thoughtfulness it is equally disadvantageous, when on such occasions party determinations are past into law by agitation or by talent, as when a practical juste milieu fails to be attained by means of reciprocal limitations and concessions. Book Description
Excerpt from Ecclesiastical History: A History of the Church in Five Books, From A. D. 322; To the Death of Theodore of Mopsuestia A. D. 427 Theodoret, the author of the following history, was born at Antioch, about the year 387. His parents had long been childless; and it is related that much prayer was offered, and especially by Macedonius, a hermit, that a son might be born unto them. Little is known respecting the childhood and early youth of Theodoret, except that his mother, who seems herself to have been a remarkable character, dedicated him to God from his very cradle. According to some accounts he was placed in a monastery at the age of seven, where he studied theology and the sciences under Theodorus of Mopsuestia and St. John Chrysostom. Certain it is, that much of his life was devoted to study; for it is evident from his works that he was a very learned man, conversant with classical and theological literature, and acquainted with several languages besides his own, which was the Syriac. He entered upon the work of the ministry at a very tender age; for he was but a child when he was appointed to be one of the public readers of Scripture.
