The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of the Missouri Leadership Academy on improving a principal's ability to be an effective leader as perceived by superintendents, self, and teachers. Constructs of research pertaining to the study included leadership, effective leadership, professional development for leaders, and academies. In this study, the researcher administered the Leadership Practices Inventory developed by Kouzes and Posner (1995) to 37 Missouri principals, their superintendents, and a random selection of teachers. The LPI identified five key leadership practices: challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way, and encouraging the heart. The data collected were analyzed to compare participants in each of the five leadership areas as perceived by self, managers, and followers. The findings of the study suggest that teachers and superintendents perceived principals who participated in the Missouri Leadership Academy as more effective in the area of challenging the process and inspiring a shared vision. The other three leadership practices were found to parallel, regardless of participation in the academy.

Purpose of the study . The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the teachers' perception of level of implementation of the four priorities of the Basic School and teacher perception of principal effectiveness. The specific objectives of this study were: to determine teacher perception of the level of implementation of the four priorities in 21 schools formally involved in the Basic School network for over three years, to determine teacher perception of principal effectiveness within 12 dimensions and indicators of effective leadership in 21 schools formally involved in the Basic School network for over three years, and to examine the relationship between implementation of the Basic School framework and effective leadership in 21 schools formally involved in the Basic School network for over three years. Two instruments were developed, the Four Priorities of the Basic School: Teacher Perception Instrument to assess implementation of the Basic School framework, and the Dimensions of Principal Leadership Instrument to assess teacher perception of principal effectiveness. Procedure . The entire population of certified staff members in each of the 21 schools affiliated with the Basic School National Network for three or more years was asked to participate in the study. Five hundred eighty-five surveys were mailed out with a return of 327. Eighty percent of the certified teachers from the 14 participating schools returned completed surveys. The data gathered were then subjected to validity, reliability and correlational statistical analyses. Findings. The results of this study indicate that both instruments--the Four Priorities of the Basic School: Teacher Perception Instrument and the Dimensions of Principal Leadership Instrument --are reliable instruments. Each instrument is also strong in convergent validity while showing weakness in construct and discriminant validity. The results of this study establish that there is a relationship between implementation of the Basic School priorities for school renewal and teacher perception of principal effectiveness. However, the attempt to explain the degree to which selected underlying background variables contributed to explaining this relationship was only partially successful.

Over the years, the demanding job of principal had constantly shifted between school manager to instructional leader and back again. While the research was strong on the positive impact of principals leading learning in schools, the impact of that leadership on student performance was significant. Yet, the day-to-day managerial responsibilities persist. The purpose of this study was to analyze principals' perceptions and knowledge of 21 best practices in business management that have been shown to raise employee engagement and ask the principals to predict what impact implementing these practices in schools would have on the level of teacher engagement. The principals also predicted if increased teacher engagement would lead to improved student performance. A survey of these best business practices and their impact on teacher engagement was administered to 104 elementary, middle, and high school principals. These same principals had the opportunity to respond to open-ended questions that further clarified their perceptions. From the 104 principals, nine participated in interviews, contributing additional insight into the thoughts of practicing principals and gauged the level of impact on teacher engagement. Results from the three methods of data collection indicated that principals felt strongly that implementing most of the 21 business practices would raise the level of teacher engagement. The principals also felt that by raising the level of teacher engagement, student performance would be enhanced. Five practices were listed at the top of each set of data. When the principal: a) built trust, b) ensured that employees felt cared for, c) encouraged individualized professional growth, d) established a compelling vision, and e) established clear expectation, teacher engagement would elevate.

The purpose of this study was to determine what leadership responsibilities principals of successful middle level schools in Texas perceived as most essential to student achievement. The study was also intended to reveal how closely these principals' leadership responsibilities align with the literature. The Texas Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) data were analyzed from 2005 to 2008. From this data, middle school campuses with 500 or more students, a free and reduced lunch rate greater than 50%, and AEIS ratings of "exemplary" three of four years were identified. Thirty-nine campuses met the criteria and 15 of the principals agreed to serve as the expert panel. Using a modified Delphi technique, panelists completed a 26-item questionnaire and an open-ended comments section. This comprised Round One of the study. Data were analyzed for mean, median, standard deviation, and inter-quartile range (IQR). Unique questionnaires were developed based on panelist responses from Round One. Panelists were to review their responses to questions falling outside of the IQR and were able to change or maintain their responses after reviewing the data. Panelists repeated this procedure reviewing all questions with responses outside the IQR for Round Three. The major findings of this study revealed many of the critical leadership responsibilities are supervisory and not instructional. The five leadership responsibilities (ties are denoted) perceived by panelists as most critical to student achievement were:(1) ethical behavior, (t2) collaborative processes, (t2) visibility, (t3) collective vision, (t3) high expectations, (t3) instructional supervision, (4) professional development, and (5) intellectual stimulation. Through all three rounds, ethical behavior was identified as the most critical leadership responsibility. The findings of this study may potentially impact hiring practices of middle level campus leaders as well as their certification programs and professional learning opportunities. It is recommended principal preparation programs require an ethics course, and school districts provide annual ethics training for leadership teams. Additional professional learning should include team and collaboration building. Finally, based on the literature, it was recommended a principal certification specifically for middle level leaders be offered and/or middle level course work be included in the principal certification program.
