The Meaning and Purpose of Work
Author: Christopher Michaelson
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040123066
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 114
Book Description
Two seminal crises of the early 21st century – the 9/11 terrorist attacks and COVID-19 pandemic – have led emerging generations of workers to prioritize the meaning and purpose of work. At the same time, other social and environmental crises are threatening, capitalism is evolving, and technology is advancing. In this book, a philosopher and organizational psychologist who together research meaningful work consider what these forces mean for whether work might give meaning and purpose to our lives or take it away. The authors introduce key concepts – meaning, purpose, and work, among others – and consider how they show up in individuals’ experience of work, what role organizations play in cultivating them, and the responsibilities of markets and states to the individuals and organizations working within them. Each chapter includes questions and prompts for review and reflection for students and workers who read the book. The final chapter concludes by introducing an original “6 P” framework for making sense of the functional and moral purpose of work among individuals, organizations, and systems: to pursue and perform, provide and produce, and price and protect work. Readers will emerge with an understanding of the meaning of meaning as well as a practical appreciation for the role of meaning in their own work, the managerial responsibilities they may have for serving the purpose of the organization they work for, and the societal challenges that make the quest for meaningful work a timely imperative

My Back Pages or Everyday Events
Author: Mylon Banks
Publisher: Xlibris Corporation
ISBN: 1664155651
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 89
Book Description
I was born and raised in a small Northern California town. At one time, the population was very near that of the fictitious town of Payton Place with equal amounts of gossip and everyone knowing everyone else’s business. I graduated from the local high school in the late ’60s and couldn’t wait to get out of town. I moved to the city and began a series of counterculture adventures, which ultimately landed me in jail. Over the course of time, I came to think fondly of the time I spent in my then small hometown. The town has grown since then but is still small, relatively speaking. I have always enjoyed writing and sharing my experiences with other people and now, at this point in my life, would like to relay what it was like growing up with “country ways." Plain ole everyday events are what make up all our lives. What follows here are some of those events that have made up my life and those around me. Some of these stories are pieces I wrote for a writing group I was involved in at our local library. The group was “Down Memory Lane” and was anything about our past in our small town. Our pieces were usually printed in the local newspaper, and I came to appreciate the comments I would get on the articles. Of course, this is life in a small town, so usually everyone knows everyone else and their dogs. But as Wallace Stegner once said, “How do you make a book that anyone will read out of lives as quiet as these?” This is that attempt. This is just plain old everyday events. Fellini once insinuated that what he creates is more real to him than what actually is or was. He created his own reality. Most of these stories are just as they happened. I did these stories in an effort to explain the time and the events that made up those experiences (my life and times).

Fishing Through the Apocalypse
Author: Matthew L. Miller
Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield
ISBN: 1493037420
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
What does the future hold for fish and the people who pursue them? Fishing Through the Apocalypse explores that question through a series of fishing stories about the reality of the sport in the 21st century. Matthew Miller (director of science communications for The Nature Conservancy) explores fishing that might be considered dystopian: joining anglers as they stick their lines into trash-filled urban canals, or visiting farm ponds where you can catch giant, endangered fish for a fee. But it isn’t all bleak. When it comes to fishing, the other part of the story is this: a cadre of anglers is looking to right past wrongs, to return native species, to remove dams, to appreciate the unappreciated fish, to clean our waters and protect public lands. As an angler and conservationist, Matt removes any and all preconceived notions about what it means to fish in the 21st century in order to see the different visions of the future that exist right here, right now. Fishing Through the Apocalypse offers one of the widest-ranging looks at fish conservation in the United States, and also includes some of the more unusual adventures ever featured in a fishing book. Features fishing adventures in: Idaho Colorado Wyoming New Mexico Utah Texas Florida Iowa Minnesota Illinois Washington DC Virginia Pennsylvania
