Book Description
Excerpt from The Two Angels, and Other Poems: With an Introductory Sketch by George Gilfillan The appearance of a new volume of Poems from the pen of Mr Alexander Anderson, of Kirkconnel, so widely known by the nom-de-plume of "Surfaceman," seems to justify a short sketch of his life, and an appraisement of his poetry. This account shall at least have the two merits of Sincerity and of Shortness. And first, of the events of his life. Mr Anderson was born on the 30th of April 1845, at Kirkconnel, a small village at the upper end of Dumfriesshire; his boyhood was spent at Crocketford, another small village in the lower end of Galloway. At a humble school he gained the rudiments of his early education. Here, he tells us himself, he was not remarkable for any particular cleverness or aptitude for learning. He was a good penman, however, took great delight in acquiring what Dominie Sampson calls "a firm, current, clear, and legible hand," and became a caligrapher. The notanda about himself, which he has kindly sent us, and his correspondence, prove that he can write in both senses of the term - not scrawl inscrutabilities, as too many of his kindred are in the habit of doing. He was a good sketcher, too, and enjoyed a local fame for colouring. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Shakespeare became famous as a dazzling poet before most people even knew that he wrote plays. His sonnets are the English language’s most extraordinary anatomy of love in all its dimensions–desire and despair, longing and loss, adoration and disgust. To read them is to confront morality and eternity in the same breath. Produced under the editorial supervision of Jonathan Bate and Eric Rasmussen, two of today’s most accomplished Shakespearean scholars, The Sonnets and Other Poems includes all of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the long narrative poems “Venus and Adonis” and “The Rape of Lucrece,” and several other shorter works. Incorporating definitive texts and authoritative notes from William Shakespeare: Complete Works, this unique volume also includes an expanded Introduction by Jonathan Bate that places the poems in literary and historical context and illuminates their relationship to Shakespeare’s dramatic writing. Also featured are key facts about the individual selections; an index of the first lines of the sonnets; a chronology of Shakespeare’s life and times; and recommendations for further reading. Ideal for students and general readers alike, this modern and accessible edition sets a new standard in Shakespearean literature for the twenty-first century.

Book Description
This major new poetry collection from bestselling poet and priest Malcolm Guite features more than seventy new and previously unpublished works. At the heart of this collection is a sequence of twenty seven sonnets written in response to George Herbert’s exquisite sonnet 'Prayer', each one describing prayer in an arresting metaphor such as ‘the church's banquet’, ‘reversed thunder’, ‘the Milky Way’, ‘the bird of paradise’ and ‘something understood’. In conversation with each of these, Malcolm’s sonnets offer profound insights into the nature of communion with God in all circumstances and conditions. Recognising that all poetry is a pursuit of prayer, After Prayer also includes forty five more widely ranging new poems, including a sonnet sequence on the seven heavens.
