Im Mittelpunkt dieses Bandes stehen die Zusammenhänge zwischen dem Selbstverständnis schreibender Frauen und den religiösen und kulturellen Veränderungsprozessen vom 15. bis ins 17. Jahrhundert. Das Augenmerk liegt insbesondere auf den unterschiedlichen Wegen, die Frauen in dieser Zeit beschritten haben, um sich schriftlich zu äußern, ihre Texte zu verbreiten und am Austausch intellektueller Zirkel teilzunehmen. Einerseits geht es also um die Kommunikationsräume, in denen Verfasserinnen sich in Spätmittelalter und Früher Neuzeit bewegt haben, und andererseits um die Kommunikationsformen, die sie hierfür gewählt haben. Zusammen genommen sind die Kommunikationsräume und -formen der dokumentierbare Ausdruck für diese Wechselbeziehung zwischen den gesamtgesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozessen und weiblicher Autorschaft. The present volume focuses on the rules and customs which determined the activity of female writers in the transition from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. The topics include the connections between specific religious and cultural processes of change, the praxis of women writers, and women's understanding of their own role as authors. In this context, particular attention is given to the various routes taken by female authors of this period in order to express themselves in print, to disseminate their texts, and to engage in intellectual networking. On the one hand, therefore, the focus lies on the communicative space within which female authors in the late Middle Ages and early modern times operated, and, on the other, on the forms of communication which they chose for their literary creativity. Taken together, the areas and forms of communication constitute the basis of what can be documented concerning the interaction between the larger processes of change within society and the women's authorial activity.

Zeno’s Republic, a design of the ideal state consisting of gods and wise citizens, has been controversial since antiquity. The study looks at the controversial topics and tries to come to a new reading of the Republic as the vision of a society where life is lived according to natural law. The provocative call to promiscuity, incest and cannibalism can be explained within the frame of the cosmo-biological system, outlined by the founder of the school. This reading confirms that Stoic ethics with its central theory of oikeiosis is not concerned with the individual’s self-discovery as with the cosmos’ self-preservation. Attached is a collection of the fragments with German translations. Zenons Politeia, der Entwurf eines idealen Staates bestehend aus Göttern und Weisen, ist seit der Antike umstritten. Die vorliegende Studie behandelt nicht nur die kontrovers diskutierten Argumente, sie will auch zu einer neuen Deutung der Politeia als der Vision einer Gesellschaftsform führen, in der das Leben nach dem Gesetz der Natur verwirklicht ist. Die provokante Forderung nach Promiskuität, Inzest und Kannibalismus erfährt auf diese Weise eine Erklärung innerhalb des kosmo-biologischen Systems, das der Schulgründer geschaffen hat. Gender equality has been on the agenda of national policies of higher education within and outside the European Union (EU) for the last twenty years. In some European countries, this process was initiated early on and has brought about remarkable results, while in others progress has been slower. Different countries and institutions have focussed on different strategies for raising awareness about the discrimination of women and for increasing the number of women in aca- mia, particularly in leadership positions. Previous research on gender equality in higher education has produced many case studies about programmes at institutions of higher education in Europe and elsewhere. Different actors like the European Commission and - tional organisations have also furnished reports about national policies. Building on this material, it is now time to analyse under what conditions equality p- grammes are successful. For a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of and barriers to gender equality in higher education, we also need studies that focus on the development of gender equality policies in different countries, as well as on conditions of implementation, change of strategy, and the evaluation of - sults. Comparative studies would be another useful tool for understanding the development and success of gender equality programmes.
