But I must tell you about the beautiful Pheasants, for you have seen them in museums, and in parks, and sometimes in the farm-yard. The Pheasant has a very long tail, the feathers of which overlap one another like the tiles or shingles upon a roof. There are several kinds of pheasants, some of which are now common in Europe and in this country, but the true home of them all is in Asia. The Common Pheasant lives wild in England and in other parts of Europe, but it was first brought from the banks of the river Phasis in Asia Minor; and it was called Pheasant from the name of the river. Its colors are golden-fawn and green, and its head and neck have the lustre of polished metals. The Golden Pheasant, which you may sometimes see in this country, has a golden-colored crest, an orange-colored neck speckled with black, a green back, a yellow rump, red under parts, red wings with a blue spot on them, and a long brown tail spotted with gray.
