After a year's service in the army of Northern Vir ginia, he was elected Captain of his company, and held this command until the battle of Gettysburg, when he was made prisoner and carried to Fort Delaware, thence to Johnson's Island, Ohio. During his imprison ment here, Dr. Leavell was a member of a class of students of Law, taught by General J. Z. George. Through the instrumentality of Dr. Barnard, his former college President, who, though a Northern man, was Dr. Leavell's staunch friend, he was liberated.
