Book Description
"To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first successful planetary mission, Mariner 2 sent to Venus in 1962, the NASA History Program Office, the Division of Space History at the National Air and Space Museum, NASA's Science Mission Directorate, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory organized a symposium. "Solar System Exploration @ 50" was held in Washington, D.C., on 25-26 October 2012. The purpose of this symposium was to consider, over the more than 50-year history of the Space Age, what we have learned about the other bodies of the solar system and the processes by which we have learned it. Symposium organizers asked authors to address broad topics relating to the history of solar system exploration such as various flight projects, the development of space science disciplines, the relationship between robotic exploration and human spaceflight, the development of instruments and methodologies for scientific exploration, as well as the development of theories about planetary science, solar system origins and implications for other worlds. The papers in this volume provide a richly textured picture of important developments - and some colorful characters - in a half century of solar system exploration. A comprehensive history of the first 50 years of solar system exploration would fill many volumes. What readers will find in this volume is a collection of interesting stories about money, politics, human resources, commitment, competition and cooperation, and the "faster, better, cheaper" era of solar system exploration"--

Book Description
Where did we come from? Before there was life there had to be something to live on - a planet, a solar system. During the past 200 years, astronomers and geologists have developed and tested several different theories about the origin of the solar system and the nature of the Earth. Together, the three volumes that make up A History of Modern Planetary Physics present a survey of these theories. The early twentieth century saw the replacement of the Nebular Hypothesis with the Chamberlain-Moulton theory that the solar system resulted from the encounter of the Sun with a passing star. Fruitful Encounters follows the eventual refutation of the encounter theory and the subsequent revival of a modernised Nebular Hypothesis. Professor Brush also discusses the role of findings from the Apollo space programme, especially the analysis of lunar samples, culminating in the establishment, in the 1980s, of the 'giant impact' theory of the Moon's origin.

Book Description
Origin of the Solar System covers the proceedings of the conference held at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York on January 23-24, 1962. The book focuses on the issues related with the origin and development of the solar system, as well as star formation, solar nebula, and protostars. The selection first offers information on the historical review of theories of the origin of the solar system, including the role of turbulence, influence of electric and magnetic effects, and modern tidal theories. The book also ponders on star formation and contraction of the sun toward the main sequence. Discussions focus on the environment and stages of star formation, instability of protostar, collapse and fragmentation, and Helmholtz contraction of protostar. The text evaluates the formation of the planets, light nuclei, and solar nebula and dissipation of the solar nebula. The book also takes a look at meteorites and the early history of the solar system, as well as early thermal history of meteoritic matter, chemical fractionations in chondrites, and extinct radioactivity and general isotopic anomalies. The selection is a dependable source of information for readers interested in the origin of the solar system.
