Book Description
From the bestselling creator of The Thundermaker comes another adventure featuring Little Thunder and Wolverine--a trickster, who is strong and fierce and loyal. The two are best of friends, even though Wolverine can sometimes get them into trouble. Their favourite pastime is eel fishing, whether it's cutting through winter ice with a stone axe or catching eels in traditional stone weirs in the summer. But that all changes one night, when they encounter the giant river eel--the eel that is too big to catch. The eel that hunts people! At once a universal story of friendship and problem-solving, Wolverine and Little Thunder is a contemporary invocation of traditional Mi'kmaw knowledge, reinforcing the importance of the relationship between the Mi'kmaq and eel, a dependable year-round food source traditionally offered to Glooscap, the Creator, for a successful hunt.

This book of Wolverine "trickster" legends is the first collection in a series presented for reading in Naskapi and in English by the Naskapi Development Corporation. John Peastitute (1896 - 1981) was a Naskapi Elder who was not only well respected as a story-keeper, but also as a storyteller. His repertoire of both tipâchimûna (stories) and âtiyûhkinich (legends) was extensive, and his performances engaging. The tape recordings of his stories that have survived to be preserved, processed and studied are a precious legacy.

Book Description
Edwin Thompson Denig was assigned as the post bookkeeper at Fort Union on the Upper Missouri in 1837 by the American Fur Company. He spent close to two decades there and married into the Assiniboine. In the summer of 1851, Father Pierre Jean de Smet spent two weeks at Fort Union. He encouraged Denig to write a number of sketches of the manners and customs of the Assiniboine and neighboring tribes. Denig compiled additional information in response to queries by early ethnographers, including Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, who were collecting ethnological information about Indian tribes in the United States.
