Some of the great foreign critics would be most welcome at Wellesley when we can afford to invite them. We Shall look forward to the time when we can make close connections with foreign artists and schools of art. Science - The interesting work in science continues, and there is a gratifying increase in the elective work in all the natural sciences. The Trustees will remember how much cramped these departments are in the way of space. I must again urge the necessity for a science building. It will be remembered that in the interests of safety the department of Chemistry was moved out of College Hall years ago, and housed in a small building of its own. This was thought of only as a makeshift, and should be replaced by a permanent structure. All four of the courses in Geology have been carried, and the head of the department is especially gratified with the progress toward a higher grade of study observed in the class in advanced geography. The College is receiving the topo graphical maps published by the United States Geological Survey, and now possesses a large number of these ready for use at any time. It has also received a collection of speci mens from Mr. George A. Walton, which were collected by Mrs. Walton, and are now given to the College in her memory. Excerpt from Wellesley College: Annual Reports, President and Treasurer, 1903 I have the honor to submit a report of the College for the year ending November 1, 1903. The year has been an important one, both in the internal and the external history of the College. Long and careful discussions in the Academic Council have resulted in some modifications of the curriculum, which it is believed will make for better scholarship; while the external affairs of the College demanded the fulfillment of the pledge to raise an endowment fund by Commencement time. Problems of internal and external growth have thus at the same time confronted the administration, problems of the utmost importance to the welfare of the College. That two of these questions have been settled within the year, should give the Trustees good ground for rejoicing. Since the last annual meeting the Board of Trustees has met with losses, the first coming early in the year when on the 6th of December, 1902, the former President of Wellesley College, Alice Freeman Palmer, was suddenly taken from us. Mrs. Palmer had been identified with the College in a most intimate way for almost the whole period of its existence. Perhaps no one of this Board, except Mrs. Durant, knew more of its history, of its ideals, of its development; and certainly she had an important part in all work for the College. Coming to it as she did in 1878, being made President in 1881, and fulfilling six years of most arduous and useful work, she served the College at a time when it was in its most formative period, and impressed her own ideals of scholarship and of right living upon it in an indelible fashion. Excerpt from Wellesley College Bulletin: Annual Reports President and Treasurer 1927-1928 To the Board of Trustees: I have the honor to present my report for the year closing June 30, 1928. The full history of the year can be learned only by consulting the reports of the other administrative officers, including those of the Deans, the Librarian, the Chairman of the Committee on Graduate Instruction, and of the Treasurer. There have been various changes in the Board of Trustees during the year under review. The most significant of these is the resignation of the Treasurer of the College, Mr. Lewis Kennedy Morse, in January, 1928. The value set by the trustees upon the service of Mr. Morse as Treasurer is indicated by the following resolution adopted by the Board at their meeting on March 9: In accepting the resignation of the Treasurer of the College, Mr. Lewis Kennedy Morse, the trustees wish to place on record their deep appreciation of his service to the College. Mr. Morse was elected to the Board in November, 1912; he became Assistant Treasurer in May, 1913, and Treasurer January 1, 1914.During Mr. Morses term as Treasurer, the College has undertaken three campaigns for funds: the million-dollar fund for salary endowment, begun in 1913 and merged after the fire of March, 1914, with the Restoration Fund, amounting with the insurance award to nearly three million; the first phase of the Semi-Centennial Fund of $2, 700, 000, completed in June, 1921; and the later phase of the Semi-Centennial Fund still in progress, amounting on January 1, 1928, to $4, 553, 260. At the close of the fiscal year 1912-13, the Trust Funds of the College amounted to $1, 364, 677; on June 30, 1927, the Treasurers Report shows the Trust Funds to be $8, 520, 418, of which $5, 866, 874 is permanent endowment. With the assistance of the Finance Committee, the Treasurer has had the handling and investing of these funds. How ably Mr. Morse has accomplished his task is shown by the statement of the auditors that on December 31, 1927, the market value of the securities held by the College exceeded the book value by approximately $1,500,000. On February 12, 1917, Pauline Adeline Durant, the widow of the founder of the College, died at her home in Wellesley. Mrs. Durant gave the heartiest co-operation to Mr. Durant's plan for founding the College, and throughout his life assisted him in every way. After his death in October, 1881, she accepted the care of the College as a sacred trust from her husband, and gave to it thought, time, and money. Mrs. Durant had been an invalid confined to her home for more than three years before her death, but until these later years no meeting of the Board of Trustees nor any college function was complete without her presence. N 0 more just appreciation of Mrs. Durant's life and work would be possible than that furnished by the following Resolutions adopted by the Trustees and by the faculty. In the death of Pauline Adeline Durant on February 12, 1917, Wellesley College loses not only its associate founder but a devoted friend and bene factor. On March 28, 1929, Katharine Lee Bates, Professor Emeritus of English Literature, died at her home in Wellesley after a long illness. Miss Bates graduated from Wellesley in 1880, the second class to receive degrees from the College. She received the Master of Arts degree in 1891. Middlebury College gave her the honorary degree of Litt. D. in 1914, Oberlin College in 1916, and she was one of the three alumnae who were awarded the LL. D. by Wellesley at the fiftieth anniversary celebration in May, 1925. Although Miss Bates retired from active teaching in 1925, she was up to the time of her death a very real part of the College. Her service to her Alma Mater can be no better described than in the following minute adopted by the Academic Council at the time of her death: In the death of Katharine Lee Bates, Wellesley College suffers an immeasurable loss. From the time of her entrance as freshman to the day of her death as Professor Emeritus, her life was interwoven with the college fabric, and her distinctive individuality made itself felt in all her relationships, as student, instructor, professor. Possessing great strength of character, imaginative insight, resolute idealism, she gave her powers unsparingly to the ser ice of the College and of her friends. As head, for many years, of the English Literature Department, she brought to her office productive scholarship, high standards, intellectual and moral, and unwearied patience in the search for truth. Her mind had the rare combination of delicate intuition M-ith great power of concentration, and it constantly touched with quickening power the mands of her students and her colleagues. She lent to academic life the pungency of wit, the gentleness of humor and of kindliest sympathy. To her creative work she brought the same gifts of mind and of spirit; many volumes of prose and of verse give enduring expression to her devotion to truth and to beauty.
