Who is the human in media philosophy? Although media philosophers have argued since the twentieth century that media are fundamental to being human, this question has not been explicitly asked and answered in the field. Armond R. Towns demonstrates that humanity in media philosophy has implicitly referred to a social Darwinian understanding of the human as a Western, white, male, capitalist figure. Among pivotal historical moments in the United States, the civil rights movement stands out. In Where the Sacred and Secular Harmonize: Birmingham Mass Meeting Rhetoric and the Prophetic Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement, David G. Holmes offers an original rhetorical analysis of six speeches delivered during the 1963 civil rights campaign in Birmingham, Alabama. Holmes frames his analysis within the biblical concept of prophecy. However, he stresses the idea of prophecy as sociopolitical forth-telling, rather than mystical foretelling. Based on his own transcriptions from rare recordings, Holmes examines how these orations, which clergy and laypeople delivered, address enduring themes such as the role of religion and politics, black leadership and black activism, and the political and popular legacies of the civil rights movement. Drawing upon American history, politics, hermeneutics, homiletics, and rhetoric, Holmes’s discussion ranges from civil rights prophets to contemporary politicians, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama. Racing Translingualism provides both theoretical and pedagogical reconsiderations of the translingual approach to language diversity by addressing the intersections of race and translingualism. This collection extends the disciplinary conversations about translingualism by foregrounding the role race and racism play in the construction and maintenance of language differences. In doing so, the contributors examine the co-naturalization of race and language in order to theorize a race-conscious translingual praxis. The book begins by offering generative critiques of translingualism, centering on the ways in which the approach’s democratic orientation to language avoids issues of race, language, and power and appeals to colorblind racist tropes of equal opportunity. Retellings: Opportunities for Feminist Research in Rhetoric and Composition Studies In Retellings: Opportunities for Feminist Research in Rhetoric and Composition Studies, the contributors use the anniversary of the publication of Cheryl Glenn’s Rhetoric Retold: Regendering the Tradition from Antiquity Through the Renaissance, the first book to examine women’s contributions to rhetoric across history, as an opportune moment to assess feminist rhetorical research and test out new possibilities. Together, the essays ask, what does it or should it mean to engage rhetoric from a feminist perspective? Each chapter addresses one of four aspects of this question, including the place of feminist rhetoric in contemporary (real-world and transnational) politics; the relationship between feminist rhetorical studies and identity studies; the prospects for feminist research methods and methodologies; or the feminist rhetorical commitment to “paying it forward” through teaching and mentoring. Collectively, the essays push scholars to expand the national boundaries of rhetorical inquiry to include women’s roles in global politics. Contributors also engage in intersectional analyses of gender and other vectors of power (including, here, religious affiliation and sexuality), considering identities as epistemic resources for rhetors.
