« En Arctique, la diminution de la couverture et de l’épaisseur de la glace augmentent les échanges océan-atmosphère. D’un côté, l’augmentation des vents et de la période d’éclairement de la colonne d’eau pourraient entraîner une augmentation de la production primaire. D’un autre côté, l’augmentation de la stratification causée par une augmentation des apports en eau douce pourrait limiter les apports en nutriments dans la zone euphotique, favorisant ainsi la croissance des cellules de petite taille et limitant la production primaire. Les eaux du Nord (NOW), considérée comme l’un des sites les plus productifs de l’Arctique, montre une diminution de l’intensité de la floraison printanière, ainsi que de la productivité automnale depuis une vingtaine d’années. La région du détroit de Nares, au nord de NOW, est accessible à l’aide du brise-glace de recherche NGCC Amundsen depuis 2013 et présente une opportunité inédite d’acquisition de données in situ. Les objectifs de cette étude étaient (1) de décrire la variabilité de la production, de la biomasse et des groupes fonctionnels phytoplanctoniques de deux régions distinctes du nord de la baie de Baffin durant les étés 2013, 2014 et 2016 et (2) de déterminer l’influence des facteurs du milieu, notamment celle de la stratification verticale de la colonne d’eau, sur la structure de taille et sur les groupes fonctionnels de la communauté phytoplanctonique dans ces deux régions. Le détroit de Nares présentait la biomasse totale la plus élevée et la plus grande contribution des cellules de grande taille (≥5 μm - diatomées), montrant cette région comme étant potentiellement plus productive que NOW en été. Dans les deux régions, une diminution de la contribution des cellules de grande taille à la production primaire totale est observée. L’année 2016 dresse le portrait d’un été arctique peu productif. Ces conditions seraient liées à une floraison hâtive qui pourrait être causée par la modification du couvert de glace et/ou par une augmentation de la stratification.
