The color selected should be light, in order to get the maximum value from the current and avoid undue contrast between work and surroundings. It should likewise be as free from dark areas as may be practicable. Smooth paints and papers give a very considerable amount of surface reflection of white light in spite of the pigments with which they may be colored. The effectiveness of various surfaces may be deduced from the following table, which gives the nature of the surface and the percentage of white light reflected by it: Per cent. White paper 80 Chrome yellow paint 60 Yellow pine 45 Yellow paper 40 Liht yellow paint 40 Emerukl green paper 18--.OS Blue-green pnper 12--.1 No reflecting surface can add to the light it reflects: there is merely the question of how much is absorbed. But while we desire maximum reflection and minimum absorption, which would be conferred by a glossy white surface, this advantage would be outweighed by the glare and the cold, barren aspect of the walls. Several tints recommend themselves as being unobtrusive and agreeable, and also of high reflecting power. In fact, their capacity in the last respect is greater than the table indicates, since the light reflected by them would contain a greater proportion of red and green, the colors for which their reflecting capacity is greatest. The color selected is a light greenishyellow which, by tungsten light, becomes a pleasing yellowish green. Other similar tints are suitable, but in general we prefer a tint tending to yellow for shady rooms and one tending to green for sunny exposures. It is to be remembered that in the publication of these comments the Bureau does not necessarily undertake to indorse the opinions expressed, but will lend the pages of this section to discussion of such contemporary topics as will be of interest and value to the service. United States Pharmacopoeia Convention. The bureau has received notification that a call will soon be made for delegates to the United States Pharmacopoeial Convention, to be held in May, 1910. It is the desire of the bureau that the medical officers and pharmacists of the navy shall interest themselves in this important work, particularly in view of the greater importance which the Pharmacopoeia has assumed by reason of its adoption by the Government as the legal standard in the national pure foods and drugs act. To this end, and to invite a free expression of views, the bureau will receive any criticisms based on the present Pharmacopoeia or suggestions for the next revision, and will, at the proper time, place them in the hands of the delegates to be designated to represent the navy at the pharmacopoeial convention. CONCERNING EXTRACTS AND ABSTRACTS FOR PUBLICATION. In the section Progress in medical sciences, under the heading Hygiene and sanitation, will be found an extract forwarded for publication by Surg. L. W. Curtis. Mention is made of this contribution because it is an example of the interest which it is desired that all medical officers and members of the Hospital Corps should take in bringing important professional news to the attention of the medical branch of the navy.
