Book Description
Excerpt from Under Twelve Flags IT was a cold stormy night in late winter when a young girl, standing at the window of her room, said: Who would think, Lizette, that our bright, beautiful Paris could be the dismal place this weather makes it seem? The good Lord, who sends all sorts of weather, gives Paris only its share of cold. Old Lizette spoke very grimly; for some reason she had been solemn all day. Lizette was usually cheerful; so Elise fancied that she also felt the depressing influence of the long storm, for all her moral precepts. Oh! But Paris is so lovely in the summer, when the streets are bright, and the flower markets like gardens of beauty! Don't you long for a day under the trees in the Bois? Life is not all flowers and frolics, as you will find only too soon, my Petite! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Under Many Flags IN olden days kings and emperors sent their armies to conquer weaker nations. As soon as the victory was won, the flag of the vanquished was torn down, and the flag of the victor was raised. Two thousand years ago a new king sent his army into the world. It was a small army with no guns and no battleships, and in it were only twelve men. They were commanded to go first to the lands nearest to them and then out into all the world. Book Description
Excerpt from Under Two Flags, Vol. 1 of 3: A Story of the Household and the Desert The appellative, gained at Eton, was in no way un deserved. When the smoke cleared away that Was circling round him out of a great meerschaum-bowl, it showed a face of as much delicacy and brilliancy as a woman's, handsome, thorough-bred, languid, non chalant, with a certain latent recklessness under the impassive calm of habit, and a singular softness given to the large dark hazel eyes by the unusual length of the lashes over them. His features were exceedingly fair - fair as the fairest girl's; his hair was of the softest, silkiest, brightest chesnut; his mouth very beautifully shaped; on the whole, with a certain gentle, mournful love-me look that his eyes had with them, it was no wonder that great ladies and gay lionnes alike gave him the palm as the handsomest man In all the Household Regiments - not even ex cepting that splendid golden-haired Colossus, his oldest friend and closest comrade, known as the Seraph. Book Description
Excerpt from Under Three Flags: With the Red Cross in Belgium, France and Serbia The outbreaks of the war found us peacefully motoring through Germany. The news of mobilisation reached us on the outskirts of Berlin, and burst upon us, with something of its full meaning, in the Friedrich Strasse, where our road was blocked by vast numbers of students marching through the streets and shouting, "Nach Paris!" These tumultuous demonstrations continued both day and night, during our forced stay in Berlin. Sleep was out of the questions, as until daybreak the city rang with tramping footsteps, and the thunderous strains of "Die Wacht am Rhein" and "Deutschland, Deutschland uber Alles!" Award-winning author Guy Gavriel Kay evokes the dazzling Tang Dynasty of 8th-century China in an masterful story of honor and power. It begins simply. Shen Tai, son of an illustrious general serving the Emperor of Kitai, has spent two years honoring the memory of his late father by burying the bones of the dead from both armies at the site of one of his father's last great battles. In recognition of his labors and his filial piety, an unlikely source has sent him a dangerous gift: 250 Sardian horses. You give a man one of the famed Sardian horses to reward him greatly. You give him four or five to exalt him above his fellows, propel him towards rank, and earn him jealousy, possibly mortal jealousy. Two hundred and fifty is an unthinkable gift, a gift to overwhelm an emperor. Wisely, the gift comes with the stipulation that Tai must claim the horses in person. Otherwise he would probably be dead already...

Book Description
. Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book Description
“ExxonMobil has met its match in Coll, an elegant writer and dogged reporter . . . extraordinary . . . monumental.” —The Washington Post “Fascinating . . . Private Empire is a book meticulously prepared as if for trial . . . a compelling and elucidatory work.” —Bloomberg From the Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling author of Ghost Wars and The Achilles Trap, an extraordinary exposé of Big Oil. Includes a profile of current Secretary of State and former chairman and chief executive of ExxonMobil, Rex Tillerson In this, the first hard-hitting examination of ExxonMobil—the largest and most powerful private corporation in the United States—Steve Coll reveals the true extent of its power. Private Empire pulls back the curtain, tracking the corporation’s recent history and its central role on the world stage, beginning with the Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 and leading to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. The action spans the globe—featuring kidnapping cases, civil wars, and high-stakes struggles at the Kremlin—and the narrative is driven by larger-than-life characters, including corporate legend Lee “Iron Ass” Raymond, ExxonMobil’s chief executive until 2005, and current chairman and chief executive Rex Tillerson, President-elect Donald Trump's nomination for Secretary of State. A penetrating, news-breaking study, Private Empire is a defining portrait of Big Oil in American politics and foreign policy.
