Book Description
"This amazing book takes the reader back to the 1880s author H. H. Bancroft's actual writing, in which he represented what Lake County Pomo People were like and how they lived. Now, the Pomo of Lake County, California has the opportunity to voice their perspective for the Native Peoples using their own voices and those of their ancestors. How did these people, called "savages, barbarians, and primitives" at that time, actually exist over the last 15,000 years? What made them successful? What were their unique governments and their relationship to Mother Earth? This material is written using the unique views of Bancroft alongside voices of Indigenous Peoples as handed down through their oral history. The ancestors have the potential to speak through current generations by bringing age-old songs, stories, and traditions back to life. While this book is written about the Lake County region, the story transcends location. When we shine a light on dark parts of history, we have the opportunity to reshape our relationship to the present."--Publisher's description.

Book Description
Secure in their isolated valley until the arrival of the white man, the Native Americans of Lake County and their ancestors lived for more than 12,000 years in this temperate Eden of abundance. The anthropologist who labeled them all by one name was mistaken though; the Pomo were actually 72 independent villages, or tribelets, that spoke at least seven distinct and mutually unintelligible languages. Theirs was a culture without war, without tyranny, without greed--until the Gold Rush. Like native plant seeds, they have blown and been carried and have taken root again and again. Though their history far predates the camera, the artifacts, stories, and historical images collected from this region and its inhabitants can portray, in part, their joy and pain and their powerful ability to change and endure.

Book Description
This source compiled by Edward W. Gifford, a professional anthropologist from the University of California, is an ethnographic survey of the Eastern Pomo, specifically those living in the village of Cigom, located on the eastern shore of Clear Lake, Lake County, California. Much of the material obtained by the author for this report was supplied by the informant Jim Pumpkin, a resident of the Pomo village of Danobidau. Information concerning other Eastern Pomo groups, as well as Northern and Southeastern Pomo communities is also included in this survey. It should be noted that data presented in this paper dealing with the Hill Patwin of Long Valley, were obtained by Gifford from an Eastern Pomo informant. The major categories covered in this source are: a concise sketch of the village of Cigom -- location, inhabitants, interhouse relationships, composition of the Cigom family, etc; marriage; occupations; chieftainship; dance houses and sweat houses; ceremonies and dances and their participants; cremation ceremonies for the dead; money; games; personal names; relationship terms; and biographies of various Pomos.
