Excerpt from Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 3 Owing to the recent advances in the knowledge of the etiology of many tropical diseases the subject of their prophylaxis is a very promising one, since the general principles on which efficient and economical preventive measures should be based are now well understood. In the application Of such general principles local conditions must be carefully considered, and thus in describing the various methods to be adopted those suitable for certain localities have been given as types. In the spread of many tropical diseases intermediate hosts play an important part, and the life-history of such hosts, Often insects, has been considered at some length, as a knowledge of this subject is essential to the proper understanding of the rationale Of the preventive measures proposed. An attempt has been made to group the diseases treated of according to their known or probable causation. Thus, in the first part those diseases are dealt with which, like Malaria, are known to be due to Protozoa, and others, such as Yellow Fever, which are probably due to such Organisms. In the second part diseases due to the higher forms Of animal life are considered. The third part is devoted to bacterial diseases, to the effects Of certain animal and vegetable poisons, and to certain diseases the causation of which is unknown or but imperfectly understood. The advantages Of this arrangement are considerable, as the general outline Of the prophylactic measures required differs for the diseases described in each part. Excerpt from Transactions of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 2: March, 1909 I AM not here this evening with any idea of delivering a lecture on spirochetes, for I quite appreciate the fact that there are many present who know very much more about the subject than I am ever likely to do. My reason for putting these specimens of a spirocheta before you is that during my work in India I came across it while examining for tubercle bacilli, and following up the case I was led to believe that it was probably the cause of a distinct type of fever associated with bronchitis. The story of the find is this: In January, 1907, a European guard of the East Indian Railway was sent to me from Delhi as a case of malarial cachexia requiring hospital treatment. He was admitted into the East Indian Railway Hospital at Tundla, and was seen by me the following morning. He was anaemic, very weak, with no definite enlarge ment of the spleen, and had a temperature of 104 F. His blood was examined for malarial parasites with a negative result. On the second or third day I found his temperature on a four-hour chart was continuous, keeping between and 104 F., and that he was troubled with a very irritable cough, bringing up a lot of thin watery expectoration. For three years after 1895 the swelling of the leg remained comparatively slight. He can walk about with difficulty. As our knowledge of the life-cycles of these organisms is exceedingly limited, I think it somewhat premature to say they belong to an entirely new genus, and I hope to show you that they do belong to a group which has long been recognized as occurring in the alimentary tracts of insects. From a study of the flagellates of the parasite of kaia-azar in the test tube, as well as in the bed-bug Cimex rotundatus, I have no hesitation in saying it is not a trypanosome; for, like all other observers who have studied this stage, I have never seen anything similar to the Well-known vertebrate trypanosome.
