Book Description
Excerpt from Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 1 of 3 Owing to the recent advances in the knowledge of the etiology of many tropical diseases the subject of their prophylaxis is a very promising one, since the general principles on which efficient and economical preventive measures should be based are now well understood. In the application Of such general principles local conditions must be carefully considered, and thus in describing the various methods to be adopted those suitable for certain localities have been given as types. In the spread of many tropical diseases intermediate hosts play an important part, and the life-history of such hosts, Often insects, has been considered at some length, as a knowledge of this subject is essential to the proper understanding of the rationale Of the preventive measures proposed. An attempt has been made to group the diseases treated of according to their known or probable causation. Thus, in the first part those diseases are dealt with which, like Malaria, are known to be due to Protozoa, and others, such as Yellow Fever, which are probably due to such Organisms. In the second part diseases due to the higher forms Of animal life are considered. The third part is devoted to bacterial diseases, to the effects Of certain animal and vegetable poisons, and to certain diseases the causation of which is unknown or but imperfectly understood. The advantages Of this arrangement are considerable, as the general outline Of the prophylactic measures required differs for the diseases described in each part. Excerpt from Transactions of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 3: January, 1910 Sir havelock charles said that when he saw. The death of Sir alfred jones reported a few da\s ago, he was foreiblv struck with a sense of the irreparable loss Which the School of Tmpical Medicine at Liverpool had suffered. Sir alfred jones had been a successful man in life; he was also a successful man in death, in that he had left behind him a reputation of doing good to his fellow men. It had been a great thing (as Sir patrick manson had just said) that, at a time when Tropical Medicine had but a few friends in England, a man with the determination and the good will of Sir alfred jones had been present to give a helping hand. He desired to warmlv second the resolution which had just been moved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Transactions of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 3: February, 1910 If there is one circumstance specially characteristic of the disease as it affects miners it is the secrecy and unexpectedness with which the disease is hatched under ground and the suddenness with which it leaps into existence. Close study of events as they occurred in the mining centres of Hungary, Silesia, Westphalia, France and Belgium shows that the malady travelled from coal field to coalfield carried by infected workmen, that a considerable time is required for a mine to become infected, that once it is infected the workmen gradually become the subjects of ill-health attended by a form of anaemia, the cause of which is the presence of a parasite in large numbers in the intestinal canal, which acts either by directly abstracting blood or, what is more probable, by the injection into its host of a toxin or toxins at the site of the puncture made in the mucous membrane by its booklets.
