Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Medical Treatment, or Clinical Therapeutics, Vol. 2 of 2 It is in the nature of pulmonary tuberculosis, if unchecked, to cause progressive destruction of the organ it attacks. If any portion of the structure of the adult lung is destroyed, as Virchow pointed out, it can never be restored to its former state of integrity. If a large. Portion is destroyed, it must e1 er remain ao. It is clear, then, that the restor ation of a lung to its former state of integrity in a case of pulmonary tuberculosis must he of rare occurrence, and if we are to cure phthisis, in the generally accepted sense of the word cure, we must, whatever our remedy may be, treat it in its earliest stage, before it has led to any considerable destruction of lung tissue; but we may arrest the course of the disease, and so remedy cases, even when the disease is somewhat advanced, and subsequent retrogressive and protective anatomical changes in the lungs may restore the patient to a fairly active and useful life. Book Description
Excerpt from Therapeutics and Materia Medica, Vol. 1 of 2: A Systematic Treatise on the Action and Uses of Medicinal Agents, Including Their Description and History Sous years have elapsed since the present work was undertaken and announced, but its completion has been delayed by several causes, the chief of which were the author's election to the chair of Theory and Practice of Medicine in the Medical Department of Pennsylvania Col lege, and the onerous duties which that ofiice imposed upon him during a period of five years. The studies which they rendered necessary have tended greatly to enlarge the original plan of his treatise, and have also, it is hoped, rendered it more worthy than it would otherwise have been of a favorable reception by physicians and students of Medicine. Intended for those who desire to learn the surest methods of curing disease, it has seemed not only allowable, but imperative, that in the form of the work scientific unity and precision should be subordinated to practical utility. At the same time, it would have been unpardonable to leave out of sight those fragments of scientific knowledge which may one day serve to bridge the chasm between theory and practice, and convert the precepts of therapeutics into laws. Cullen's ar rangement, which is principally founded Upon the general effects of medicinal agents, and partly also, in its minor subdivisions, upon their physical relations, is still viewed by many, and I believe justly too, as the most perfect classification that has hitherto been offer ed upon this subject. Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Therapeutics, Vol. 2 A considerable portion has been left out in this translation, amounting to 980 of original 2,196 pages (exclusively of indexes). This omission was necessary, in order to bring the work within suitable limits for publication in this library. The omitted portions are as follows: 1. The pharmaceutical details. 2. Descriptions of the physiological action of drugs. 3. Articles on Milk, Haw Meat, and Pepsin; on Magnetism, Electricity, Acupuncture, Massage, Gymnastics, and Flagellation; on Hydro-therapeutics and Caloric; and a small number of drugs of little importance. 4. The Introduction, 110 pages in length, containing a historical account of the progress of medicine from the earliest ages. The translation is made from the latest (ninth) edition of the original, published in 1875 and 1877, under the direction of Professor Pidoux. This edition and the preceding one (eighth) were revised by M. Constantin Paul, who, however, has carefully avoided making any change which should alter "its original character and the stamp of the times when it was written." Some errors of the pen have been corrected by the translator - such as "plus" for "moins," "efficacite" for "inefficacite," "tonic" for "toxic," and the more obvious mis-spellings of English and German names. Such other liberties as have been taken have been entirely in the interest of the reader; and it is hoped that the present text is not an unfaithful reproduction of the original.
