Resigned N.P. R.R., 1883. Entered the service of Pennsylvania Railroad. 1886, placed in charge of the air-brake system, Powelton Avenue Engine House. Resigned that position, 1893. Transferred to Jersey City, 1893. Leading machinist, Waldo Avenue. Resigned Pennsylvania Railroad, 1895. Entered the service P. & R. R. R. to look after air-brake system. Ninth and Green Streets, Philadelphia. Appointed air-brake instructor, Y. M. C.A., Third and Berks Streets, 1898 and 1899. Appointed air-brake instructor, Philadelphia and New York Division, 1902. 1904, appointed general inspector at Baldwin Locomotive Works to receive 179 locomotives for the P. & R. R. R. 1907, general inspector at Baldwins Locomotive Works to receive 25 locomotives for the Georgia Central R. & R. Mr. F. F. Gaines' choice as an inspector. 1908, March 8th, appointed air-brake instructor, Philadelphia Reading R. R. system. 1917, forwarded to Baldwins Locomotive Works to receive information concerning the Mallett Compound Locomotives, so as to demonstrate same on Frackville grade. 1918, January and February, forwarded to Baldwin's Locomotive Works to receive 47 foreign locomotives. 1918, April, forwarded to Lehigh University to train soldiers for General Pershing for overseas duty. 1918, December 7th, appointed machinery examiner, P. & R. Excerpt from The Air Brake Catechism: And Instruction Book on the Construction and Operation of the Westinghouse Air Brake and the New York Air Brake, With a List of Examination Questions for Enginemen and Trainmen At the present day so much depends on the proper handling of the Automatic Brake that a definite knowledge is required from all men in train service of its operation when in good order, and how to locate defects or break downs, as well as how to avoid the difficulties arising from them. This applies to the veteran as well as to the beginner. The changes in the mechanism, caused by the new and improved devices brought into service to take care of longer freight trains and faster passenger trains, as well as the devices for independent operation of the locomotive brake, call for study on the part of the men who have handled the brake for years, for a passenger train of moderate length equipped with ordinary 'triple valves and a long train with all high speed brakes are two widely different propositions, and the veteran looks for information on them As for the beginner, he can not learn it all from experience, as no one is allowed to handle important trains until he has shown, either by an examination or by handling a moving train under the supervision of some man who can judge, that he has the necessary knowledge to properly operate the brake under all ordinary conditions.
