What is most strikingly new about the transcultural is its sudden ubiquity. Following in the wake of previous concepts in cultural and literary studies such as creolization, hybridity, and syncretism, and signalling a family relationship to terms such as transnationality, translocality, and transmigration, 'transcultural' terminology has unobtrusively but powerfully edged its way into contemporary theoretical and critical discourse. The four sections of this volume denote major areas where 'transcultural' questions and problematics have come to the fore: theories of culture and literature that have sought to account for the complexity of culture in a world increasingly characterized by globalization, transnationalization, and interdependence; realities of individual and collective life-worlds shaped by the ubiquity of phenomena and experiences relating to transnational connections and the blurring of cultural boundaries; fictions in literature and other media that explore these realities, negotiate the fuzzy edges of 'ethnic' or 'national' cultures, and participate in the creation of transnational public spheres as well as transcultural imaginations and memories; and, finally, pedagogy and didactics, where earlier models of teaching 'other' cultures are faced with the challenge of coming to terms with cultural complexity both in what is being taught and in the people it is taught to, and where 'target cultures' have become elusive. The idea of 'locating' culture and literature exclusively in the context of ethnicities or nations is rapidly losing plausibility throughout an 'English-speaking world' that has long since been multi- rather than monolingual. Exploring the prospects and contours of 'Transcultural English Studies' thus reflects a set of common challenges and predicaments that in recent years have increasingly moved centre stage not only in the New Literatures in English, but also in British and American studies.

The swelling flows of migration from Africa towards Europe have aroused interest not only in the socio-political consequences of the migrants' insistent appeals to 'fortress Europe' but also in the artistic integration of African migrants into the cultural world of Europe. While in recent years the creative output of Africans living in Europe has received attention from the media and in academia, little critical consideration has been given to African migrants' modes of narration and the manner in which these modes give expression to, or are an expression of, their creators' transcultural realities. Transcultural Modernities: Narrating Africa in Europe responds to this need for reflection by examining the manner in which migrants compose and negotiate their Euro-African affiliations in their narratives. This interdisciplinary volume investigates com-munity in postcolonial language situations, texts, and media. In actual and imagined communities, membership assumes shared features – values, linguistic codes, geographical origin, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, religion, professional interests and practices. How is membership in such communities constructed, manifested, tested or contested? What new forms have emerged in the wake of globalization, translocation, and digital media? Contributions in linguistic, literary, and cultural studies explore the role of communication, narratives, memory, and trauma in processes of (un)belonging. One section treats communication and the speech community. Here, linguistic contribu-tions investigate the concept of the native speaker in World Englishes, in socio-cultural communities identified by styles of verbal duelling, in diaspora communities, physical and digital, where identification with formerly stigmatized linguistic codes acquires new currency. Divisions and alignments in digital communities are at stake in postcolonial African countries like Cameroon where identification with ex-colonizer and ex-colonized is a hot issue. Finally, discourse communities also exist in such traditional media as newspapers (e.g., the Indian tabloid in English). In a section devoted to narrative and narration, the focus is on literary perspectives – post-colonial memory, trauma, and identity in Caribbean literary works by David Chariandy and Pauline Melville and in Australian Aboriginal fiction; narratives of banditry in colonial India; xenophobia and urban space in South Africa; human–animal community crossings and anthropomorphism in Life of Pi. A third section, on linguistic crossings in transnational music styles in global and Ugandan music industries, examines language, style, and belonging in music cultures. This book places transcultural memory in the South Asian cultural and literary context. Divided into two parts, the book first defines transcultural memory in the age of globalised modernity both as a theory and social practice. Then it examines contemporary Indo-English novels from India and Pakistan with the theoretical and methodological tool of transcultural memory to shed new light on the connection between memory and modernity, and memory and South Asian cultures in the wake of new social and political transformations on the Indian subcontinent. A special focus on commemorative tropes in the novels not only show the possibility of a dialogue with different versions of the past, but also how such a dialogue shapes processes of remembrance between and beyond borders. Hence, the books comes up with alternative ways of reading the Indo-English novels, divesting the concept of (trans)cultural memory from its Euro- centrism and claiming it as equally significant in comprehending the new configurations of memory and modernity in non-Western locations.

La publicación de este volumen representa un caso relativamente insólito. Un pequeño grupo de jóvenes investigadores de menos de treinta años convence a un grupo mucho más numeroso de la misma edad para celebrar en Salamanca la First Conference of Young Researchers on Anglophone Studies. El resultado es deslumbrante. No solo demuestran una gran capacidad organizativa, sino que los resultados individuales de las aportaciones científicas son sobresalientes. Este volumen, Current Trends in Anglophone Studies, recoge una selección revisada de las propuestas presentadas en el Encuentro y gira en torno a una estructuración tripartita clásica: estudios culturales, lingüísticos y literarios. En ella caben todos aquellos que se mueven en el campo de los estudios anglófonos. Cada uno de estos campos podría haber sido suficiente para celebrar un congreso, pero parece razonable que en este tipo de encuentros tengan cabida todos. De ese modo, este volumen se convierte en un ejemplo de aproximación interdisciplinar a los estudios anglófonos. Desde un punto de vista cuantitativo, los estudios culturales ocupan sin duda un espacio menor. Sin embargo, sobresale la variedad de temas tratados, así como la internacionalización de los autores, dentro de este apartado. Estudiantes españoles e italianos acometen estudios relacionados con la música, la pintura, el cine, la traducción, la marginalidad social o el impacto de las nuevas tecnologías en la producción artística. Si no pareciera demasiado atrevido, podría decirse que estos jóvenes estudiosos irían más allá de lo que un día ya lejano pudieron imaginar Richard Hoggard o Raymond Williams. Los estudios aquí presentados reflejan, sin duda, la evolución que la propia sociedad ha experimentado en estos últimos cincuenta años y exploran la relación entre las prácticas culturales, la vida diaria, y los contextos económicos, políticos e históricos. No es de extrañar que una gran parte de las contribuciones presentadas en este volumen se centren en el estudio de la lengua, ya que la demanda del inglés se ha incrementado de forma considerable en los últimos años. Sobresalen los análisis puramente filológicos y sobre todo los relacionados con el aprendizaje del inglés como segunda lengua. Por eso, destacan estudios que contemplan rasgos morfológicos, léxicos o sintácticos. Sin embargo, el mayor número de participaciones hace referencia al ya citado aprendizaje del inglés como L2, tanto desde el análisis de materiales, como desde la práctica oral o escrita. Las contribuciones literarias ofrecen una evaluación teórica, formal e interpretativa de distintas tendencias desde perspectivas tanto interdisciplinares como interculturales. Cronológicamente los estudios abarcan textos desde el siglo XVIII hasta nuestros días, con un acento especial en los autores más contemporáneos y en el género narrativo. En general estos estudios se fijan en textos concretos y los analizan desde perspectivas culturales, sociológicas o psicológicas. Pero abundan menos las aproximaciones desde la teoría literaria, desde la técnica narrativa o, como tal vez cabría esperar al tratarse de estudiantes tan jóvenes, desde la aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías. Por el contrario, se repiten temas como los traumas heredados de la Guerra de Vietnam, las cicatrices del 11 de septiembre o los problemas de género.
