This paper describes the use of time-lapse video techniques for in situ observation during controlled and free corrosion of high-strength Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys 7075 and 7150 and two Al-Zn binary alloys. Direct observation of corroding 7075 in various tempers shows that, as a precursor to stable pit formation, a deformable gelatinous layer of corrosion product develops. Gas is evolved at the metal/hydrated oxide interface, which distorts the gel layer at potentials below those expected for pitting. During stress corrosion cracking of 7150 T6, time-lapse video images confirm that initial drying after total immersion of 0.6M NaCl solution leads to an acceleration in the apparent rate of crack growth from 5 x 10-7 m/s to 9 x 10-6 m/s. This rate is sustained for only a few minutes but could help explain the aggressive nature of alternate immersion testing.

Industrial interest in wrought heat-treatable aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) based alloys dates back to around 1919 in Germany. However the exploitation of these alloys has historically been limited by their mechanical property anisotropy and concerns over their localized corrosion resistance and temperature stability. Recently, in the last ten years, alloy and process development has resulted in alloy compositions and thermomechanical treatments that potentially can overcome these issues. To put these developments in perspective we have reviewed the corrosion characteristics of first, second and third generation alloys with an emphasis on localized corrosion (intergranular and exfoliation) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Intergranular corrosion susceptibility of Al–Li–Cu and Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys increases with copper content, and the depth of attack increases with ageing, i.e. UAPA~30 mm) further analysis of corrosion test results is required.

The use of the slow strain-rate stress corrosion technique for testing aluminum alloys is discussed. This technique is compared to the more frequently used statically loaded, alternate immersion test technique used for evaluating the susceptibility of aluminum alloys to stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Aluminum alloys (2124 and 7075), each in three conditions with differing susceptibilities to SCC, were tested by both the statically loaded alternate immersion test and the slow strain-rate technique. The results of these tests are compared and the slow strain-rate test is shown to be a viable, rapid technique for determining the SCC susceptibility of aluminum alloys.
