Other losses such as the killing of seedlings, destruction of seed source, reduction in growth, and introduction of rot produce a much greater impact upon the future timber supply than mortality. Book Description
Excerpt from Wood-Using Industries of South Carolina Industries of the State of South Carolina. A portion of the material was collected by correspondence with the manufacturers and part was secured by personal visits and study at the fac tories. Representatives of both the Forest Service and of' the State were engaged in the fieldwork. The statistics given relate to the twelve calendar months of 1912. The work was done in accordance with the plan followed by the Forest Service in preparing similar reports for other States. It contains data showing the kinds and quantities of the various woods employed by manufacturers, and whether they are pro cured within the State or outside; the particular products made, and general information regarding methods of manufacture; the numerous uses found for the different woods; and the cost, or price, of the various kinds of wood delivered as rough lumber at the factories. This report gives the results of the first comprehensive attempt ever made in the Palmetto State to ascertain the character and scope of the industries which employ wood as raw material and reduce it to finished products. It is not possible, therefore, to compare present. Figures with equivalent data for earlier years and thereby measure the progress made. But it is generally known that although the supply of timber is decreasing, the methods of using it are improving. Book Description
Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina The policy of the average citizen appears to be based upon the theory that our natural resources are inexhaustible, and that we should get all out of them we can to-day and let the future take care of itself. And so thoroughly grounded are these notions in our public and private policy that it is exceedingly difficult to secure the adoption of any plan which runs counter to them. But fortunately, in the matter of our forests, their preservation for use by a future generation need not prohibit the utilization of the valuable timber now standing by the present generation. It only demands that while we cut and make use of this timber we protect the young growth, and look to the restocking of our waste lands with valuable trees, pnd thus make the forest valuable for future generations also. Book Description
Excerpt from Forest Fires in North Carolina During 1914: And Forestry Laws of North Carolina Extremely dry weather has often been spoken of as a frequent cause of forest fires. This, however, is a misapprehension. Dry weather can no more cause a fire in the woods than a loaded gun can cause the death of a friend. It is the careless individual in both cases who causes the trouble. If carelessness could be eliminated, the forest fire caused by dry weather and the death caused by the gun which was not loaded would not occur. Book Description
Excerpt from The Trees of North Carolina In the preparation of this little book the authors have had in mind the need of a simple treatment of the trees of North Carolina for the use of any one who may be interested in them. Until now there has been no publication even approximating this character except Dr. Curtis' Woody Plants of North Carolina a valuable work, but long since out of print and out of date, and Bulletin N o. 6 of the North Carolina Geological Survey by Pinchot and Ashe which is also out of print. The Woods and Timbers of North Carolina, by P. M. Hale was a republication of the reports of Dr. Curtis and others. Book Description
Excerpt from Forest Plantations at Biltmore, North Carolina If all this planting were summed up on the basis of area planted, the total might be as high as acres, though this can never be more than a rough estimate because so few traces remain of the plant ings that failed. Some early failures, inevitable because of the new ness of the work in this region, occasioned considerable replanting. In addition, stands of native hardwoods were to some extent under planted. The records Of these operations obscure the facts as to total area planted, but it is probable that well-marked stands of planted timber never covered more than acres in the estate. Stands which have been cut to make way for agriculture or were on land which has since been separated from the estate are not considered in this publication.
