Book Description
This original and wide-ranging work examines historical perceptions of nature in China and the relationship between insider and outsider, state and village, top-down conservation policy and community autonomy. After an introduction to the history of wildlife conservation and nature reserve management in China, the book places recent tiger conservation efforts in the context of a two-thousand-year gazetteer of tiger attacks--the longest running documentation of human-wildlife encounters for any region in the world. This record offers a unique perspective on the history of the tiger as a dynamic force in the political culture of China. While the tiger has long been identified with political authority, the Chinese pangolin and its earthly magic have exerted a powerful influence in the everyday lives of those working and living in the fields and forests. Today the tiger and the pangolin, government officials and village communities, must work together closely if wildlife habitat conservation programs are to succeed. Extensive fieldwork in the Meihuashan Nature Reserve and other protected areas of western Fujian have led the author to advocate a landscape ecological approach to habitat conservation. By linking economic development to land use practices, he makes a strong case for integrating nature conservation efforts with land tenure and other socio-ecological issues in China and beyond.
Yawning at Tigers
Author: Drew Dyck
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 1400205468
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
“A needed corrective to self-indulgent Christianity.” Philip Yancey “A stirring challenge.” Lee Strobel “A strong antidote against a domesticated God.” Matthew Lee Anderson When was the last time you were overawed by God’s majesty? Have you ever stood in stunned silence at his holiness and power? In our shallow, self-centered age, things like truth and reverence might seem outdated, lost. Yet we’re restless. And our failed attempts to ease our unrest point to an ancient ache for an experience of the holy. Drew Dyck makes a compelling case that what we seek awaits us in the untamed God of Scripture—a God who is dangerous yet accessible, mysterious yet powerfully present. He is a God who beckons us to see him with a fresh, unfiltered gaze. Yawning at Tigers takes us past domesticated Christianity, into the wilds where God’s raw majesty, love, and power become more real and transformative than we could ever imagine.

Once we've given anything some thought and formed an opinion about its goodness or evilness, that view tends to stick with us. Although we don't always follow our moral convictions, they do serve as a source of motivation for us. Sometimes, the most important lesson we can learn from a story is the value of human interaction. Engagement. suitable for a wide range of students. Safer learning environments encouraging creative thinking. providing information that is retained. Trammell
Author: Todd Masters
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 1476625794
Category : Sports & Recreation
Languages : en
Pages : 241
Book Description
For nearly two decades Alan Trammell displayed an all-around game as a fielder, hitter, and base runner that was rare for shortstops of his era. With second baseman Lou Whitaker, he formed one-half of arguably the greatest double-play combination in baseball history and was an integral piece of one of the signature teams of the 1980's. Trammell was a World Series hero and a central figure in one of the greatest pennant races in American League history. From his early days as a multi-sport prep star in the talent-rich San Diego area, through a meteoric ascension up the minor league ladder and into the big leagues, Trammell won over doubters and overcame setbacks to become one of the top players in the Detroit Tigers' history. He joined Ty Cobb and Al Kaline as the only players to spend 20 seasons in Detroit, and later served an ill-fated managerial stint with the franchise. This exhaustively researched biography provides the first book-length account of the life and career of one of the most well-known figures in Detroit sports history.
