Book Description
Excerpt from The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary, Vol. 1 Wise people who have a genuine desire to increase their knowledge of their native language cultivate what may be called the dictionary habit, that is to say, they refer to every possible opportunity to on those storehouses of words bearing the prosaic but significant title "Dictionary." It is amazing how one's fund of knowledge will gradually but unfailingly be enriched in this way, and it is no less amazing how frequently one is called upon to refer to such a work, even if only a working knowledge of a language is desired. In the course of our every-day conversation we make use of words that are, naturally, familiar to us; but in the course of our daily reading, how often do we meet with words that are unfamiliar? It may be that some of these words, as words, are known to us, yet we do not fully appreciate their meaning, or their different meanings - for many words possess a number of meanings - nor would we know exactly how, where, or when to use these words if we wished to include them in our conversation or our writings. Pronunciation, too, we may find another barrier difficult to overcome, and this may well be so, considering that in very many instances there is a difference of opinion even among authorities on the English language as to the way in which certain words should be pronounced. No matter how much we may read, or how often we may listen to the speech of others, it is not possible for us to become acquainted with the proper use of words and their correct pronunciation without the aid of a dictionary. Nor will an ordinary meet all our requirements, for ordinary dictionaries often fail just where we most need help. What is really wanted is a dictionary that explains the meaning and gives the pronunciation of every word that we are ever likely to look up, and, in addition to this, shows us, by means of stories and other explanations, how the words are used. To take an example. All dictionaries will tell us what the word bucolic means, and also how it is pronounced; but we may search in dictionary after dictionary and never find - as we shall in The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary - exactly how to pronounce the adverb bucolically, and how it is used. The pictures, too, will be found an invaluable help. While their artistic standard is very high, their main purpose is to explain. Photographs have been used when the camera has been able to meet this end, but in explaining technical words pen, pencil, and brush have in many instances been found to bring out the meaning more clearly. Which of us can fail to realize what abrupt means when looking at the sheer and giddy drop of the cliff illustrating this word? - which of us will not know a good deal about the barbette of a battleship after studying the drawing on page 336? These are but two examples of the many thousands of pictures contained in The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary, pictures that indicate as surely as words the meanings of the subjects they illustrate. There is not a page without a picture, and often there are several pictures on one page. The crude wood engravings so often seen in the early dictionaries and, indeed, in some modern dictionaries, find no place here. Book Description
Excerpt from The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary, Vol. 2 Amusements and Pageants that have Come Down to Us from Early Times carnival (kar' ni val), n. The days before Lent, devoted to revelry; a joyous festival; festive amusement. (F. carnaval.) Long ago when Lent was much more widely and strictly observed than it is to-day, the few days just before Ash Wednesday were given over to amusements and pageants, and the name ought really to be reserved for this particular time. In very early times the carnival began on Twelfth Night (January 6th) and continued up to and including Shrove Tuesday, but from about the year 1600 the public rejoicings were cut down to a shorter period. In Naples and other Italian towns very elaborate programmes are arranged, extending over a period of six, or seven days, but in Spain the carnival lasts only four days, and in France it is cut down to one day - Shrove Tuesday itself. The feast of Mardi Gras, as it is called in France, is, however, celebrated nationally, and the day is a feast day throughout the whole country. Many Christians do not eat meat during Lent, and the carnival is, as it were, a farewell festival in anticipation of this time of self-denial. Lord Byron refers to this in the sixth book of his poem "Beppo," in which he says: This feast is named the Carnival, which being Interpreted implies "farewell to flesh" So call'd because, the name and thing agreeing, Through Lent they live on fish both salt and fresh. Byron, it will be seen, was mistaken about the derivation of the word. A wider meaning has now become attached to the word, however, and any gay festival during which decorations such as flags and flowers are used, or fancy dresses are worn, is known as a carnival. Some of them, such as the flower carnivals of the Riviera, are magnificent spectacles. Huge and elaborate cars, in which are set up gigantic figures representing King Carnival, Neptune, and other characters, pass through the streets, accompanied by thousands of gaily-dressed merry-makers; gorgeous masked balls are held in all the theatres and large halls; and great battles of flowers and confetti take place in certain of the main streets and promenades. The carnival preceding Lent at Nice, on the south coast of France, lasts for twelve days, and a shorter carnival, the Mi-careme, is held in Mid-Lent. F. carnaval, Ital. carnevale, L.L. carnelev le from L. caro (acc. carn-em) flesh, levare to lift, put away, from levis light in weight, adj. suffixal (L. - lis). Syn.: Festival, fete, gala, pageant, revelry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Waverley Pictorial Dictionary, Vol. 6: Pole Snag The earth is a huge magnet, and it has a magnetic pole at each of two points, which are some distance from the geographical North and South Poles. The latter are situate at the points where the axis of rotation of the earth meet its surface. At the magnetic poles the lines of magnetic force are vertical, and the magnetic needle dips vertically. When the north pole of a magnet is brought near the like pole of a magnetic needle the latter is repelled when the south or opposite pole of the magnet is brought near, the needle is attracted towards it. Like poles are repelled, and unlike poles are attracted. If the earth's axis were lengthened north wards, it would almost pass through the pole-star a bright star, named Polaris, in the Little Bear group of stars. This star is always almost due north of the observer, and so serves as a point by which to steer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
