Book Description
Excerpt from New Orleans Medical News and Hospital Gazette, 1858, Vol. 4: A Monthly Journal The symptoms of congestion were so marked in this patient, that I was almost inclined to suspect the existence of a beginning iritis with mom gation of congestion to the adjoining membranes, but the absence of lachrymation, and with the exception mentioned of all discoloration of the iris, the want of the characteristic dull pain, and the length of time the disease had existed without producing any of the usual visible signs of iritis, forbade the entertainment of this idea, and I was almost forced to the conclusion that I had to do with a case of congestive amblyopia' car ried to a high degree. The plan of treatment to be pursued was evident - I had to do with a case of chronic congestion - and an antiphlogistic course was indicated. Book Description
Excerpt from Virginia Medical Monthly, Vol. 10: From April, 1883, to March, 1884, Inclusive This is equal to the views of a clergyman, in Boston, in 1836, who pronounced insanity a crime and an organized type of sin and wickedness, affirming that insane asylums were causing more insane by favoring the false notion of irresponsibility and disease. The author reasons that a condition of disease may be present, as the result of long excesses in the use of spirits, but that the early stages were always phases of vice and a low moral nature.
