Book Description
The following qualitative research paper explores how the computer can be incorporated into an art therapeutic practice as a tool for art making when working with adults who are living with severe physical disabilities. The computer acts as a mediator that helps foster a sense of mastery, offers control over an art making process, and aids in the development of a positive self-concept when working in art therapy with adults who are living with chronic physical illness and limited mobility. Using a theoretical methodology and clinical vignettes, this paper examines how traditional techniques such as drawing, painting, and collage have been adapted using modern technology to meet the needs of clients who are living with physical disabilities. Advancements in new technology offer art therapists the ability to reach more individuals and diverse clinical populations. By incorporating technology into art therapy it has expanded the possibilities for clients who have physical limitations to engage in an art therapeutic process, where the artwork is created not by the therapist, but by the client. Art becomes a mirror, a container, and a witness to many personal struggles for individuals who are living with chronic illnesses.

Book Description
This multi-disciplinary collection of essays captures discussion, thinking and research surrounding the recent surge of interest in how technology can help us as we age. A wide range of topics are covered, from investigations in the use of technology to improve health and well-being, to examinations of digital gaming, mobile health apps and the quantified self in relation to an ageing population. From multi-disciplinary perspectives, this collection highlights the role of a more social approach to technology. As such, a variety of social research methods are used throughout the chapters. The benefits and issues with different approaches are highlighted both in terms of further research, but also so the reader can judge the value of the research for themselves. This collection brings together the latest thinking and cutting edge contemporary research from leading thinkers and academics in the field of human computer interaction, health and gerontology. In taking a social approach, it highlights how technological practices fit within wider gerontological, political and cultural perspectives. It therefore has potential to influence those working in human computer interaction, digital humanities, sociology, psychology and gerontology. It can help change the practice of people working in the health and social care field, in computer and product design, and in the digital and creative industries.

Book Description
As an art teacher, I have seen many students with physical disabilities struggle to use traditional art tools and media. While adapted scissors, crayons, brushes, and grips may enable some of the students to participate in the art activity, a full level of independence may not always be achieved. Just as the computer has opened up a whole new world for the art field, the role of computer technology has become even more powerful for individuals with physical disabilities. Through the use of assistive devices and art software, students with physical disabilities can express themselves creatively and to a greater degree of independence. I first discovered the area of assistive technology when taking a summer course at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. While touring the assistive technology lab, I was amazed to see how students with only the slightest head movement could type or communicate with an augmentative communicative device. If the devices could be used to type, I wondered, couldn't they also be used for art? Thus my study of combining art, computers and assistive technology began. This research project has been designed to be informative and useful for the art teacher who has students with physical disabilities. It is by no means comprehensive, nor will it provide all the necessary information to be proficient in the area of assistive technology and art. It is my hope that art teachers and other interested persons will have an increased awareness of what assistive devices and software are presently available and how they can benefit students with physical disabilities in the art classroom.

Book Description
This book is concerned with the interdisciplinary studies applying computer technologies to the theory and practice of art therapy. The contents consist of the author's sixteen papers published, twelve patents in Korea, Japan, and the U.S.A., and other relevant materials, all organized in a logical sequence. This book is intended for art therapy courses at upper undergraduate and graduate levels. No prior computer knowledge is assumed. Interpretation of drawings no longer needs to be done manually by the therapists themselves because, as this book argues, computerized systems can perform the steps of evaluation and interpretation. The difficult concept of computer science is explained in a simple and concrete way with illustrations, sample drawings, and case studies. This book explains statistical methods, various functions of a computer, technologies in digital image processing, computer algorithms, methodologies in expert systems, and the Bayesian network. All these elements can be used to improve the practice and theory in the evaluation of art and the interpretation of art. Readers do not need to worry about unfamiliar terms such as digital image, algorithm, expert system, and Bayesian network which appear here. Neither should they be concerned about pixel, cluster, edge, blurring, convex hull, regression, etc., the terms which appear later in the book. These terms will be explained with illustrations and drawings for easy understanding. Computational Art Therapy will not only promote the use of various art therapy tools but also provide a foundation for new methodologies through which art therapy researchers can develop their own methodologies to improve the practice and theory of art therapy. It will be of special interest to those studying art therapy, psychology, psychiatry, art, computer science and applied statistics.
