The UMCA was founded in the late 1850s, after the return of Dr David Livingstone from the region in 1857. This high church" Anglican society drew its missionaries initially from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Durham and Dublin. Under its motto "A servant of servants", from its main centres of Zanzibar and Nyasaland (now Malawi), the UMCA began from an early date opposing the slave trade and promoting the education of the indigenous people and the training and ordination of African priests. In 1965 the UMCA merged with the much older Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts to form the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. This collection, beginning with the Mission's monthly journal, Central Africa, comprises UMCA materials preserved in the USPG archive at the Rhodes House Library, Oxford.

Martin Pauw was born in 1940 at Madzimoyo Mission, Eastern Zambia, where both his grandparents and parents had served as missionaries. After completing his theological studies at the University of Stellenbosch, he was ordained in Malawi in the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) in 1965. Like his great grandfather, grandfather and father, he became a “missionary” – the fourth generation! He served as youth pastor and lecturer at the CCAP Theological College at Nkhoma until 1973. From 1975 he lectured at Justo Mwale Theological College of the Reformed Church in Zambia in Lusaka and from 1983 to 2001 he was lecturer and eventually professor in Missiology in the Faculty of Theology at the University of Stellenbosch (where he also had previously completed his doctoral studies with a thesis on the history of the CCAP Nkhoma Synod). Over the years Prof Pauw acted as study leader to a large number of under- and post graduate students, authored a considerable number of publications and served in various leadership positions in the church. After retiring as lecturer, he served the Western Cape Synod of the Dutch Reformed Church for a further six years as Secretary for Witness and focussed on building partnerships between the DRC and sister churches in various countries in Africa. His vast experience in, knowledge of and passion for humbly serving the churches in Southern and Central Africa, is remarkable.

David Livingstone’s Zambesi expedition marked the beginning of an ongoing series of medical exchanges between the British and Malawians. This book explores these entangled histories by placing medicine in the frameworks of mobilities and networks that extended across Southern Africa and beyond. It provides a new approach to the study of medicine and empire. Drawing on a range of written and oral sources, the book argues that mobility was a crucial aspect of intertwined medical cultures that shared a search for therapy in changing conditions. Mobile individuals, ideas and materials played key roles in medical networks that involved both professionals and laypeople. These networks connected colonial medicine with Protestant Christianity and migrant labour.
