Book Description
The House of Valois Romances. The Valois were the royal house of France from 1328 to 1589, therefore, many of Dumas romances cover their Reign. Traditionally, the so called "Valois Romances" are the three that portrait the Reign of Queen Marguerite, the last of the Valois (Marguerite de Valois; Chicot the Jester and The Forty-Five). However, another four novels cover the Reign of the Valois, and we have incorporated them to this series: Ascanio, a Romance of Francis I (1515-1547), but the main character is italian artist Benvenuto Cellin; The Two Dianas, about Gabriel, comte de Montgomery, who mortally wounded king Henry II; and was lover to his daughter, Diana de Castro; The Page of the Duke of Savoy, a sequel to the Two Dianas (1846), it covers the struggle for supremacy between the Guises and Catherine de Médicis, the Florentine mother of the last three Valois Kings of France (and wife of Henry II). The main character in this novel is Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy. The seventh novel is The Horoscope: a romance of the reign of François II (1858), who reigned for only one year (1559-1560)

Excerpt from The Two Dianas, Vol. 2 Calais, the Duke de Guise, the conqueror, and the con quered, all were forgotten. All the rumors and all the passions that surrounded the lovers did not affect them. Lost in their world of love and rapture, they no longer heard, they no longer saw, the world beyond them. The soul that has encountered SO many griefs and SO many terrors is, in some sort, weakened and enfeebled by suffering, and, although strong against sorrow, cannot resist happiness. Book Description
A fictionalization of Guerre's story, an expository depiction of the battle of Saint-Quentin and the reconquest of the British Calais, the two Dianas refer to women near and dear to Henry the Second: the king's mistress Diane de Portier, and the illegitimate daughter Diana de Castro. The first volume shapes the romance between Diana de Castro and the Count Gabriel Montgommery - with trials and tribulations. The second volume focuses on the Catholic/Protestant conflicts under the reigns of Francis II (married to Mary of Scots) and Charles IX. This effort converts Dumas Pere's novel (The Two Dianas) into 17 epics and illustrations of the terrifying meetings between the Viscount d'Exemès (Montgommery) and Henry II, the identity trial between Arnold du Thill and Martin Guerre, and introduces notable historical figures, such as Catherine de Medicis, Mary Stuart, Cardinal de Lorraine, and of course, Ambroise Paré-the famous French surgeon with his audacious techniques and inventions. Transforming the 424-page prose into a 218-page stanza, the plot remains unaltered.
