Over more than a century and a quarter of excavations the royal and administrative buildings in the city of Amarna have yielded the remains of many hundreds of statues that had been part of Akhenaten's visionary plan. But fragmentation and dispersal have up until now made the results almost invisible. Only a relatively small number of the original statues have been widely known, even to experts. The present publication brings together all these traces of the city's past to reveal the abundance, beauty, variety, and novelty of the statuary and to begin the process of reintegrating it in considerations of the temples and palaces of the city. The work is presented in two parts. The first volume presents extensive observations about the creation of the statuary, comprising chapters dealing with the range of materials and the methods of working them, a detailed explication of the novel creation of composite statuary, and an overview of the workshop buildings that have been identified so far at Amarna. In the first of a planned two volumes, Najovits, former editor in chief of Radio France International, provides a remarkably evenhanded introductory survey of Egypt. He observes that the earliest Egyptian culture, with the introduction of farming and animal husbandry, can be traced to around 5800 B.C., but his own overview begins around 4000 B.C., with an investigation of the predynastic Naqada culture and its religious system of totemism, animism and magic. Najovits contends that scholarly focus on ancient Greece and Rome and on Christianity and Judaism has tended to obscure Egyptian contributions to the development of culture. Egyptian religion was highly original, he says: "Never before had such an elaborate religion and such an all-inclusive mythology been invented." As to its lasting contributions, the Egyptians, he says, invented the belief that the body could be preserved and stay alive after death. They were also, he claims, the first monotheistic culture, although monotheism waxed and waned under various pharaohs. They developed a belief in a savior god, Osiris, whose resurrection led to a belief in the afterlife. Najovits even concludes that the holy family of Osiris, Isis and Horus offers the mythological foundations upon which later cultures constructed their own foundational holy families (e.g., Jesus, Mary and Joseph). Egypt also provided examples of early jurisprudence and political systems, primarily in its extensive legal codes and its focus on kingship. There is substantial evidence from recent archaeological investigations in the Valley of the Nobles, particularly in the vicinity of Deir el Bahari, of secondary interments in the rock-carved sepulchers from the 18th Dynasty on a large scale. Theban Tomb #188, the tomb of the royal butler, Parennefer, is one excellent example that serves as a significant case study. This monument, located in the Assasif region of the ancient Theban necropolis, has been the focus of the author's field research for the past 12 years. The subsequent clearance, documentation and analysis of the structure, its environs and artifactual and human remains forms the basis of this present study. The tomb was built in the first four years of the reign of pharaoh Amenhotep IV/Akhenaten (ca. 1377-1360 B.C.), for the royal butler, Parennefer. A stepped shaft and burial chamber excavated to receive Parennefer's mummy, however, held no remnants of funerary equipment or coffin fragments which could be dated to the 18th Dynasty. Instead, this shaft and burial crypt along with four others which had been excavated through the floor of the hall yielded substantial mortuary material (along with a large number of human remains) which can be stylistically (and prosopographically) linked to the later interments. Oral communication with other archaeologists working in the necropolis and published reports from the last 20 years have confirmed this widespread occurrence. An study of textual evidence from the Old Kingdom through the Ptolemaic Period collated with the archaeological remains of Parennefer's tomb reveals a picture of tomb inheritance and the legal appropriation of monuments (including T.T. 188) in the Theban necropolis.
