A., Minister of Nayland, Suffolk, Vol. 5 of 6: To Which Is Prefixed, a Short Account of His Life and Writings The three great subjects, with which a Christian Minister is concerned, are the Word of God, the Church of God, and the Christian Life. Circumstances and occasions will sometimes direct his thoughts to one of these, and sometimes to another: but so long as any of the three are before him, he is within the circle of his duty. I was led to the subject of the following Essay, by an acci dent. I am a curate in a country parish; who make it my business, and have found it my pleasure, to teach the children of my people, privately in my own house, and publicly in the Church; and I am, for the present, the only Sunday School master of the place. In the course of my instructions, I had occasion to observe, that the Catechism of the Church of England, though a most excellent summary of the Christian Doctrine, is deficient in one point, viz. The Constitution ofthe Church of Christ; the knowledge of which, in a certain de gree, is necessary to the preservation of that charity which is the end of the commandment and, for the want of which, so many are drawn away from the Church, who would certainly have remained with it, if they had known what it is. Yet is our Catechism not so deficient, but that it includes the grand dis tinction betwixt the World and the Church which distinction being explained, I found we were possessed of a leading idea, which gave so much light to my young pupils, that I deter mined to go through the subject. William Jones, M.A., Minister of Nayland, Suffolk, Vol. 3 of 6: To Which Is Prefixed a Short Account of His Life and Writings Every science hath its own elements; it hath a sort of alphabet peculiar to itself; which must be learned in the first place, before any judgment can be formed, or any pleasure received when that science is treated of for none but fools are enamoured with what they do not understand; and few things can be understood without being first learned. How can I understand, said the Ethiopian Eunuch, unless some man should guide me? When he looked into the prophet Isaiah, he had a book before him, in which it frequently hap pens that the thing spoken of is not the thing intend cd, and he knew not how to distinguish: (f whom speaketh the Prophet this 2 said he; of himself; or of some other man 9 Therefore he wanted one to guide him. But the case is so particular, that something more than the guidance of man is necessary; and the royal prophet was sensible of it, when he said, Open thou mine eyes, that I may see the wondrous things of thy zaw.-even in men of honest minds, well affected to the truth, there was found a slowness of heart, which oui' blessed Saviour found it necessary to re move by his own immediate grace, before his discourse could be understood then opened he their understand ings, that they might understand the scripture.
