Book Description
Excerpt from The Story of the British Coinage For those who wish to know something of the origin and history of our coined money it is hoped that the following story will serve as a brief introduction to a most interesting subject. As it may appear strange that Ireland has not been allotted a more prominent position in these pages, I would point out, in the first place, that preference has been given to the main coinages, while the branches have necessarily been treated very cursorily. As Ireland prac tically never coined any money for herself, the anglo-irish series though by no means a small matter, comes under the latter head and has been dealt with accordingly. In the second place, and this is the more potent reason, the history of the anglo-irish coinage is at present in a state of confusion from which it is almost impossible to construct a narrative suitable to a book of the present nature. I hope this ex planation will be accepted by my Irish readers. In common with other students of English and Scottish numismatics I have to acknowledge great indebtedness to the works of Hawkins, Kenyon, Evans, Burns, cochran-patrick, and other authorities. Book Description
Excerpt from The Coinage of the British Empire: An Outline of the Progress of the Coinage in Great Britain and Her Dependencies, From the Earliest Period to the Present Time A Coin, let it be found where it may, proves at once, incontrovertibly, several things concerning the people who originally issued it, and their state of civilisation. It first shows the place of its issue, either from a symbol, or the name of a city, or people; or in coins of a later period, from a portrait of a sovereign, accompanied by an inscription; the latter often relating to some great historical event; in which case the precise date of the coin is gener ally discoverable with ease: so that a coin, of which the purpose (for we know it was a piece of money), the country, and the date, cannot be disputed, besides conveying at once a general idea of the arts, resources, and manners of a people at the epoch of its circulation, must, when bearing evidence to special events, become an incontrovertible and striking testi mony. The date of the foundation of Rome, for instance, or at all events that received by the Romans themselves, is proved by a coin, struck by the Emperor Philip the Second, to commemorate the millennium of the city. Book Description
Excerpt from The Silver Coins of England, Arranged and Described: With Remarks on British Money Previous to the Saxon Dynasties It is quite unnecessary here to expatiate upon the plea sure or information to be derived from the study and col leeting of coins; because it is presumed that all who refer to this volume have already felt some taste or fondness for the pursuit, and only want to have their way smoothed, and course directed, that they may pursue it with pleasure and success. To the utilitarian, who demands an explanation of the use of the study of coins, it is in vain to attempt a reply; the pursuit, it must be acknowledged, removes no physical necessities, supplies no animal wants; it neither clothes the naked, nor feeds the hungry; its votaries are content with its afi'ording them an agreeable and innocent occupation for their leisure hours, while at the same time it is illustrating and embellishing history, that old almanac, the contempt of modern economists, but the mine from whence rich stores of wisdom and of knowledge are extracted by the sage and the philosopher. Book Description
Excerpt from The Gold Coins of England: Arranged and Described, Being a Sequel to Mr. Hawkins' Silver Coins of England We do not, however, propose to enter upon a description of the British and Roman coins in this volume. They form two series, very distinct from each other, and very distinct also from the coins afterwards struck in England. The British are fully described by Mr. Evans in his Ancient British Coins, and a short account of them, including the gold and copper as well as the silver, is given at the beginning of Hawkins' Silver Coins of England, 2nd edition. Such of the Roman coins as were known in 1844 are included in Akerman's Coins of the Romans relating to Britain. Book Description
Excerpt from The Evolution of Coinage This manual aims at dealing with only one aspect of a very large subject. Nevertheless the material had to be sought in many quarters. It would thus be impossible within the limits of a preface to indicate the extent of my indebtedness to the labours of others. Nor do I propose to attempt it. I trust, however, that the brief bibliography, while serving the purpose for which it is primarily intended, may at the same time be accepted as providing at least a bare record of the obligations of which I am more immediately conscious. Here and there, particularly in Chapter V, I have drawn somewhat freely upon my own book on Coin Types. Mr. G. F. Hill, the Keeper of Coins in the British Museum, has given me valuable advice and assistance. He even had the patience to go through the manuscript, and both he and his colleague, Mr John Allan, were good enough to read the proofs. Book Description
Excerpt from Coins of the Romans: Relating to Britain, Described and Illustrated The object of this little work, is to bring under one view the coins of the Romans which relate to the province of Britain. It is hoped that such an attempt mil not only find favour with the antiquary and the numismatist, but will also interest all who are curious in the early history of our island; some of the principal events in which, during a long period of the Roman occupation, are recorded on the coins of the conquerors.
