On Wisconsin Women traces the role women played in reform movements, both in Wisconsin state politics and in its press. Women's news and opinions often appeared anonymously in abolitionist journals and other reform newspapers even before Wisconsin became a state in 1848. The first state newspaper published under a woman's name was boycotted and failed in 1853. But from the passage of the 14th amendment in 1866 to Wisconsin's ratification of the 19th amendment in 1919, women were never at a loss for words or a newspaper to print them. Women's news won a new respectability under feminine bylines and led to the historic victory for women's suffrage. McBride undertakes the task of considering feminist reform as a conceptual whole.

Both Hands Tied studies the working poor in the United States, focusing in particular on the relation between welfare and low-wage earnings among working mothers. Grounded in the experience of thirty-three women living in Milwaukee and Racine, Wisconsin, it tells the story of their struggle to balance child care and wage-earning in poorly paying and often state-funded jobs with inflexible schedules—and the moments when these jobs failed them and they turned to the state for additional aid. Jane L. Collins and Victoria Mayer here examine the situations of these women in light of the 1996 national Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act and other like-minded reforms—laws that ended the entitlement to welfare for those in need and provided an incentive for them to return to work. Goldrick-Rab examines a study of 3,000 students who used the support of federal aid and Pell Grants to enroll in public colleges and universities in Wisconsin in 2008.
