Excerpt from Faust The German critics and commentators, in fact, are un wearied in tracing the history Of the various pieces of which this famous poetical mosaic was composed. They give us the chronology of its composition. Goethe had read the story as a child, and had evinced a child's wonder at the puppet-show which enacted the marvels of the old legend. The echo of the marionnettes had vibrated in the spirit of the boy. He had conceived the idea of his great work in 1769, when a student at the University of Leipzig. He had composed the opening scene in 1771; he had com posed the Kiug in Thule in 1774; he had composed the Song of a Rat in 1775. Then we are told there was a long interval in the work of composition. In 1775 he became domiciled at Weimar; from 1775 to 1786 he was absorbed in the dissipations and the duties of the Court; in 1786 he went to Italy; it was not till 1788 that he resumed his task. In 1788, we are told, he composed the Witch's Zfiteheh in the Borghese Gardens. Shortly afterwards he composed the Forest and Cavern scene. But here the daemonic spirit of his genius left him. Excerpt from Goethe's Faust, Vol. 1: A Commentary In such universal sense the periphery Of the Faust legend broadens out into the twilight Of History, reaching far back into Asia and taking in the very origin of the long human discipline. Goethe has not omitted this far-reaching sug gestion; in the Prologue in Heaven we shall see him calling up the grand dualism in its two persons, the Lord and Mephisto, who exist, as it were, before the human beginning, and talk together about the terrestrial being, Man, and his destiny. Indeed, the very form and conception of this dialogue carries us back to the book of Job, one Of the Oldest Of Asiatic books. Thus at the start of the poem, and underlying it, we find the spiritual or Hebraic strand; in the same Prologue we shall have a hint of the natural or Aryan strand, in that cosmical song of the Archangels, singing Of Sun and Earth, of Light and Darkness, of the conflicts of the elements, as their image of the grand struggle, which struggle, however, has not yet deepened in them to the spiritual denial of Mephisto. Perhaps this thought did not lie in the conscious intention of the Poet; but he is a seer, beholding realities and if we would compre pend him, we must follow up his vision with our thought and knowledge.
