The use of the rotating disc as a means of analysis for solutions of noble metals was examined. A half-inch graphite disc (Ringsdorff RW0058) was used and pushed onto a cone-shaped graphite rod. The solution was contained in a small Teflon boat of approximately 0,6 ml capacity. In a determination of the excitation conditions giving the best line-to-background ratio, the range of operating conditions, which is given in a table, was examined. The rotating disc method has adequate sensitivity and precision to be used for the analysis of noble metals in solutions of prills which contain very little or no base metals. The presence of as little as 2 mg of base metal generally means that base metal is the major element present, and because the various cations are concentrated into such a small volume, matrix effects can be expected to be serious and not adequately compensated for by the introduction of a buffer such as lithium metaborate (because of its limited solubility). At first sight, this appears to be a great restriction on the usefulness of the method. Subsequent work with atomic absorption and X-ray fluorescence has shown that it is preferable for base metals to be removed, ideally by ion-exchange techniques. Where this becomes necessary, the emission-spectrographic procedure is again applicable to the analysis of the resulting solutions, particularly where the determination of trace amounts of noble metals in eluates from ion-exchange methods is required, where neither atomic absorption or X-ray fluorescence really possesses adequate sensitivity for a reliable analysis.

The platinum industry, from mining through to the final refining of the individual platinum-group metals (PGM) plus gold (the noble metals), places great demands upon the skills and ingenuity of the analytical chemist. Samples containing concentrations of the noble metals ranging from lower than parts per million through to 100 per cent must be treated, and analyses for the individual six PGM and gold are required frequently. The development of the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) as the source of excitation in optical emission spectroscopy (OES) has provided a very powerful tool for the analytical chemist. The ICP-OES technique is capable of covering a wide analytical range and, in addition, enables simultaneous multi-element analysis to be carried out. These attributes make the technique particularly attractive to the platinum industry, and suitable instrumentation has been installed in several laboratories attached to mines and refineries. For normal ICP-OES analysis, a solution is sprayed into the plasma and, therefore, solid samples have to be dissolved first. This paper describes work undertaken by Mintek on a preconcentration technique in which solids (ion-exchange resin) are sprayed directly into the plasma. The results obtained are encouraging, and further applications could be explored, e.g. the determination of low levels of the noble metals in effluents. Further work needs to be done so that iridium can be included in the analytical scheme and, since most ICP-OES systems sold all use argon low-power plasma, the feasibility of the spraying of solids into these systems needs to be examined if the technique is to find wide acceptance in industry. Another requirement for its industrial acceptance is the commercial availability of the Monivex resin.

A method for the determination, by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry, of platinum, palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, and gold is described. Vanadium in a perchloric acid medium is used as a releasing agent for the removal of interferences. Tin, magnesium, chromium, cobalt, nickel, aluminium, selenium, tellurium, calcium, copper, or sodium, in amounts below 5 g/l, and gold in an amount below 1 g/l, do not interfere. Silver and lead in amounts above 0.02 g/l may cause some loss of noble metals because of occlusion in the chloride precipitate formed. SO4(2-) above 1.5 g/l may cause an interference, and iron may cause a loss of gold owing to the reduction of this noble metal. The method is rapid, since all the noble metals can be measured in one solution, and is suitable for the analysis of solutions resulting from the nickel sulphide or tin collection procedures. Coefficients of variation for all the noble meals are less than 1 1/2 per cent.
