Selective Growth of Ice Crystals From Dilute Water Solution
Author: M. Milosevic-Kvajic
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 6
Book Description
Bicrystals of ice were prepared by cutting half cylinders from monocrystals and freezing them together so that the two sections had different crystal orientations. It was observed that an unfavorably oriented crystal with a vertical c axis was progressively eliminated by the growth of the other, differently oriented crystal. The elimination rate was measured and shown to depend on impurity concentration, freezing rate, and both the relative orientation of the two crystals and their absolute orientations relative to the growth direction. The results are interpreted in terms of the 'fast' kinetics of solidification in the direction of the basal plane and by encroachment through growth onto the basal plane when growth along the basal plane is prevented by the geometry of the sample. (Modified author abstract).
