Book Description
Now there's a masterfully written guide that shows beginning and recreational skaters the fundamental skills of ice skating. In Ice Skating: Steps to Success, Karin K "nzle-Watson--nine-time Swiss National Champion, former Professional World Champion, and one of skating's best instructors--shares with readers the steps that she and many of her students learned on their way to becoming elite competitive skaters. Most instruction books available on ice skating tend to focus on advanced jumps or spins, assuming the reader will learn the basics through professional instruction. Ice Skating: Steps to Success, however, covers fundamental skills in a way that's easy to understand and apply. Part of the highly popular Steps to Success Series, this book includes 11 steps (chapters) that progress from basic to intermediate skills. It features over 300 illustrations that make it possible to learn proper form and technique. Readers will learn how to: - attain the posture and control required for basic skills; - use standard methods of gaining forward and backward speed; - execute four different methods of stopping; - fall properly and get up easily; - change direction without loss of control; and - control the skate edges in order to prepare for advanced maneuvers, including jumps, spins, and footwork. With Ice Skating: Steps to Success, beginning and recreational skaters will develop a solid foundation of skills to help them gain confidence in their abilities and enjoy the sport more.

Book Description
Judi’s parents were on a mission to remake the world. These were the Cold War years of the 1950s and ‘60s, following a catastrophic world war and the breaking up of colonial empires. The couple had joined many others in giving up conventional careers and family life to work for Moral Re-Armament (MRA), an extensive global movement in its hey-day. Their life goal was to build a ‘hate-free, fear-free, greed-free world’. Between the ages of four and twelve Judi stayed in a series of shared homes and boarding schools while her parents travelled. Uncertain where she belonged, she dreaded being asked what her father did or where she lived, becoming anxious and guarded, almost to breaking point. The author interweaves her unusual childhood memoir with her parents’ parallel story, pieced together from contemporary archives and accounts. She offers a unique insight into the work of the controversial MRA movement, encouraging readers to draw their own conclusions. Judi Conner’s book propels readers back to the mid-20th century era when a war of ideas raged, a new world order was being fought over and high ideals came at a price.

Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... chapter vi Eights--Qs--Reverse Qs. "vt ow that the edges, changes, turns, Mohawks, and- Choctaws have all been spoken of, there remain to consider (apart from Combined Skating) only the possible combinations of these, and their adaptation to the form of eights or modified eights, which in their simplest form, as has been mentioned, are complete circles of edges, outside or inside, skated on alternate feet, each of which starts from and again arrives at the centre. But into these edges can be worked turns or combinations of turns which are, so to speak, incidental to these simple complete circles, and occur either in the course of them or at the centre itself. Each circle of the eight goes on its way, starting from and arriving at the centre, and into its course are interpolated turns, brackets or Mohawks, or at the centre are placed rockers, counters, or Choctaws. Theoretically it is possible to skate any number of turns during the course of the circle; but three turns to each circle are the most that can be skated with any profit. One Turn to a Centre The simplest eight, after the edges have been mastered, is the forward turn to a centre, beginning on outside or inside edges. The line diagram (Fig. 9) shows the map of the figure if skated with ideal precision. The letters Bop, Kip, Bob, Bib in this and all diagrams denote right outside forward, right inside forward, right outside back, right inside back; while Lop, LiF, Lob, Lib, denote the same edges on the left foot. The arrows show the direction of curve. Outside Forward Turn The skater in all eights, and in every combined figure (unless otherwise directed) stands a little way back from his centre, and takes up his edge close to the centre, with the centre on the inside of his curve....
