Book Description
This book sheds light on a fascinating process of historic, legal evolution, starting from a situation of doubt as to whether the Community had treaty-making power, and ending with certain treaties being denied to sovereign states and transferred to an international organization. This process is still continuing, and brings in its wake far-reaching results. The author makes distinction between cases where exclusive treaty-making is explicitly specified in the founding treaties, and cases where treaty-making power is implicit, and is derived from the general structure of Community law. Implicit power becomes exclusive only by `occupying the field', which means enactment, and exclusive power negates ab initio the Member States' power, whereas implicit exclusive power merely negates the competence of the Member States to establish rules conflicting with those of the Community. Scholars, practitioners, lawyers, students and everybody who deals with European Union affairs will find this book of great interest.

Book Description
Dual Legacies in the Contemporary Caribbean (1986) is a comparative and systematic study of the legacies bequeathed by British and French colonial rule in the Caribbean. It examines in detail what are self-evidently among the more tangible legacies from the era of slavery presently manifest in the region: the pattern, structure and decline of the sugar economy in the French and Commonwealth Caribbean; the continuing influence of Britain in the pre- and post-independence political systems of the Commonwealth Caribbean, as well as of France over its Caribbean possessions; and the retention and adaptation of cultural forms derived from colonial practice as variously exhibited in the educational and ideological beliefs current within the region. These essays offer provocative insights and report intriguing parallels between the British and French experiences in the region. They also offer new interpretations of the processes at work in the area and confirm the utility of the comparative approach in appraising its problems.

Book Description
This book is an in depth study of one of the most important agreements in the recent history of EU-developing world relations: the Lome convention - the principles upon which all relations between the states of the European union and ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) countries are based. Over the course of its 25 year life, the Convention has been altered to suit the changing relationship of those states involved. This historical study not only charts the course of that vital relationship between haves and have-nots, but also, in its changing focus and shifting concerns, reflects recent broader changes at the global level in the international relations.
