Memories of a Theoretical Physicist
Author: Joseph Polchinski
Publisher: MIT Press
ISBN: 0262543443
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 339
Book Description
A groundbreaking theoretical physicist traces his career, reflecting on the successes and failures, triumphs and insecurities of a life cut short by cancer. The groundbreaking theoretical physicist Joseph Polchinski explained the genesis of his memoir this way: “Having only two bodies of knowledge, myself and physics, I decided to write an autobiography about my development as a theoretical physicist.” In this posthumously published account of his life and work, Polchinski (1954–2018) describes successes and failures, triumphs and insecurities, and the sheer persistence that led to his greatest discoveries. Writing engagingly and accessibly, with the wry humor for which he was known, Polchinski gives theoretical physics a very human face. Polchinski, famous for his contributions to string theory, may have changed the course of modern theoretical physics, but he was a late bloomer—doing most of his important work after the age of forty. His death from brain cancer at sixty-three cut short a career at its peak. Working on the memoir after his diagnosis, using a text-to-speech algorithm because he could no longer read words on a page, he was able to recapitulate his entire career, down to the details of problems he had worked on. For Polchinski, physics went deeper than words. This edition includes photographs from Polchinski’s professional and family life, as well as physics explainer boxes, other technical edits, and bibliographic notes by his former student Ahmad Almheiri, a foreword by Andrew Strominger, and an afterword by his wife Dorothy Chun and sons Steven and Daniel.

A Sheltered Life
Author: Darrell Hazle
Publisher: WestBow Press
ISBN: 1664200223
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 224
Book Description
Dr. Hazle thanks God and those who have helped him have a happy, successful, and Christian life. He takes the readers through many events that he considers the providence of God in his life including the serendipitous discovery of the first antidepressant—imipramine marketed in 1957—which was used to treat his first depression in 1975. He describes in his book how at the age of seventy-five years he has had a successful career as a dental officer in the United States Public Health Service and an exciting retirement even with three bouts of depression and being maintained on medication since 1975 for bipolar disorder. Of particular importance is the adversity God gave him during his third depression---lasting eighteen months---and the spiritual changes which he credits with making hm a more mature Christ-centered Christian. He also attributes part of his success in managing his bipolar illness with his understanding of neurotransmitters and emotions that began with a research project at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 1968. Described in the book is his family history of treatment for disabeling depression in three generations including: one suicide and one suicide attempt, and three family members receiving electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). He also challenges readers and demonstrates making stimulating music memories with good emotions that they would like to recall for the rest of their lives. He believes this book would be of interest to those exploring the science of depression, alcoholism, and addiction to nicotine and other drugs, as well as spiritual aspects of behavior. In the last chapter read about the author’s most interesting and memorable pheasant and duck hunting and fishing trips. God has carried out his plan for Dr. Hazle. His sincere desire is that God would be glorified through this book.

Technology & brain health
Author: Joaquin A. Anguera
Publisher: Frontiers Media SA
ISBN: 2832555586
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 108
Book Description
Keeping our brains healthy is vital to maintaining independence as we age and can improve our performance on school, sports, and all the activities we enjoy. The need to improve brain health has led to a new wave of technologies aimed at problems in neuroscience. A few examples of this can be seen in how scientists use virtual reality in research, apply electricity to the brain to improve brain health, and use video games to improve our memory. Understanding how the brain communicates and how disease and injury disrupt this communication is important for guiding future medical and research interventions. In this special topic, we will learn about how new technologies are being applied to classical neuroscience problems such as improving our memory and attention as we age, or learning new skills like languages and music. Here, readers will learn how science can be moved out of the laboratory with the use of technologies you likely use on a daily basis. As science and technology continue to advance and work together, new medical breakthroughs will improve our brain health and lead to longer, healthier lives.
