Book Description
Regionalism became a major issue in international commercial diplomacy during the 1990s. The European Union's 1992 program, the formation of NAFTA, and attempts to form or strengthen regional trading arrangements in South America, southern Africa, and Southeast Asia were all viewed as challenges to the nondiscrimination principle that had been the cornerstone of the postwar international trading system. This book provides a unified analysis of policies which discriminate among trading partners, featuring ample treatments of both history and theory as well as a review of empirical studies.

Book Description
First published in 1962. A study of the rise of great industries in Western Europe. The factors which promoted industrial growth in Britain also influenced economic developments on the other side of the English Channel and there were signs of progress in the manufactures of France, Germany and the Low Countries. The Common Market of the twentieth century owed much to the pioneer work of nineteenth-century statesmen who attempted in various ways to liberalize European trade.

Book Description
There is relatively little information on The Netherlands written in the English language which is easily accessible to social science students and even less which is systematically assembled between the covers of a single book. This is unfortunate not only because The Netherlands is an important part of Western Europe but because the experience of The Netherlands in the way in which it has attempted to resolve the economic and political problems confronting it may help to shed valuable light on similar issues facing other European countries. The contributions for this volume were chosen with these considerations in mind. On the one hand the selection of topics was intended to provide an overall impression of the political and economic development of The Netherlands since the Second World War. Thus separate chapters are devoted to an examination of economic develop ment; counter-inflation, energy, regional and planning policies; pressure groups, electoral performance, cabinet formation and colonial and Euro pean policies. On the other hand, these areas for investigation were chosen to invite specific contrast with the experience of other European nations or to illustrate certain problems of political or economic theory. It is my pleasure to thank, first of all, the contributors themselves for the conscientious way in which they prepared their drafts which made my task as editor so much easier. Secondly, it will be apparent to even the most casual observer that I have contributed two chapters.

Book Description
Originally published in 1969, the studies in tis volume deal with the proposal for a multilateral free trade association initiated by North Atlantic countries in the 1960s. Written at a time of protectionism in the USA, policy problems in the EEC and debates over Britain’s role within it, as well as discussions about tariff preferences mean that many of the themes in this volume remain as pertinent today as when the book was first published. As editor of the volume, Harry G. Johnson drew together the threads of a global concept that was commanding increasing attention around the world.

Book Description
First Published in 1985. When modern sovereign states were first established in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries they did not immediately assume full control over their national economies. The arrangements inherited from the middle-ages survived for some time so that ports, inland commercial centres, provinces and even private persons retained a wide measure of control over the movement of goods from one place to another. This study looks at the rise and development of the great industries of Western Europe through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The Common Market of the twentieth century owed much to the pioneer work of nineteenth-century statesmen who attempted in various ways to liberalize European trade.

Book Description
This volume represents a unique study of contemporary politics and policy-making in the five nation-states and three Home Rule territories of the Nordic region. Written in a lively and readable style by an expert in the field, its approach is systematically thematic and comparative. Chapters deal with current political science issues such as nation-building and state-building, party system change, semi-presidentialism and post-corporatism, as well as addressing intrinsically important regional questions such as whether or not there is a Nordic model of government, a distinctively Scandinavian form of parliamentarianism and a superior welfare system. There is also detailed discussion of the Nordic states in their strategic external environment, focusing on the post-war security configuration in northern Europe and the impact of European integration on Scandinavia.
